July 2019 New Gear Thread

Hi,

I have just ordered a new piece of gear which will be winging its way to me in July, so thought I’d start a new thread. There is a nice story attached to it.

What I managed to buy was an Alesis Fusion 6HD, with the following upgrades:

- 120GB SSD for storage
- Max ram, approx 384MB

I got it for £350 + P&P

Which when you think about it is astounding for something that is nearly as powerful as a Korg Kronos...the Kronos being about £6-700 more expensive.

So, the main reason I bought it, aside from the unique synthesis options, is that I will be playing live with my band again.

I have not performed in approx 3 years due to crippling mental health issues, including body dysmorphia, in fact I didn’t leave the house, apart from to go to work, for a couple of those years. So the fact that I’m even considering live performance is baffling...getting better seemed so impossible.

So there we go, a synth purchase that represents something very positive.

I still have all of the soundfonts I made with various loops I need to trigger live.

It’ll be fun digging through!

Congrats. I know you were after one for some time.

Viewed from the end, they always remind me of the warship in the Fifth Element

i'm getting a custom built power supply for my new modular cabinet, hopefully sometime in july. I unintentionally built a 19u rack into the back of my modular cabinet, albeit, out of wood. It's opened up some cool options, and my power supply and distribution boards are gonna be 2x 7u panels, one on either side, with a vent panel above them. I'm rather excited to get it all, but i suspect it'll be a few weeks

My biggest regret was selling my fusion 8hd. Might end up getting another fusion. Great synth.

Found a guitar I was looking for for years, bought, and was immediately refunded. Sold elsewhere. No new gear for me this month

On the short list for greatest typos of all time.

I’m curious about what happened. What was wrong with the guitar?

nothing... I guess the seller changed his mind, or he actually did sell it elsewhere.

Thanks.

Now I’m looking at some KPR Sample libraries for it, his stuff is really really good. It’ll be nice to transfer over some of my own Optigan/Melotron soundfonts too.

I know this sounds silly, but I’ve never had 300+MB Ram to play with in a hardware sampler before, and 120GB is quite a lot of storage. It’s gonna be fun to fill it all up.

My last Fusion was stock 64MB Ram, see.

It is quite marmite looking.

I think it’s kind of “Steampunk meets cyber man with 50’s Cadillac parts” and I kind of like it, I think it would really pop in a dirty copper, with black accents. I am odd.

Looks aside, it is a very unique instrument in terms of the synth market.

I don’t see any second-hand comparable instruments (300MB Ram, sampling, full VA, 6OP FM engine, Hard Disk Recording) at the £350 mark...a K2600 might be close but a little more £££, a Motif with PLG cards would also be more expensive...

A total bargain in terms of what it does, I believe.

More plugins bought at lovely summer sales discounts.

They should have called this one "The Total Incrediverb." I would describe it, scientifically, as a reverbical hyper-awesomizer, and I would also recommend it to anyone with similar inclinations to mine.

Fabulous sounding preamp emulation.

Loving this one. The V76 pre is a bit fuller, more hi-fi and expensive sounding, but the Century has such a vibe - when A/B'd against the V76 I sometimes found it made the latter sound almost a little boring in comparison (although it should be said that the V76 also makes the Century sound a wee bit cheap on occasion - so make sure you're covered by getting both)... A bit more nasal than the V76 too, perhaps. Bottom line: It may just have the most vibe of any algo preamp plugin I've tried. And then you have a super simple comp and a simple EQ, both of which seem quite useful. They did a fabulous job on this one. It's clearly marketed towards "beginners" who want something quick and simple to record through when using their UA audio interfaces, but I think people are super super silly to overlook it. Buying this one put a bit smile on my face.

Surprisingly good. Absolutely useful when you need to self "master" something in a hurry. Very easy to recommend (at the discounted price, obviously).

I'm an idiot for not demoing this sooner. Also: Got it for $9 with a coupon. Would buy again.

THIS TOTAL MONSTER OF A PLUGIN IS SO COOL.

Got a Roland VG8ex to plug my synth guitars in to...

Also my cat finds uncomfortable appearing places to lay down (he is a very small and lightweight cat so that’s how he doesn’t topple things over).

Just ordered my third of these:

Last of the big spenders, eh? I’ve not paid more than $40 including shipping for any of my PX3000s, and they’ve totally changed how I approach my studio. Somebody here on GS did an excellent job of explaining patchbays to me years ago and pointed me to these cheap little beauties, and I’ve not looked back since. I have one other patchbay which cost as much as all three of these Behringer ones combined (the Boredbrain Patchulator 8000, but that has quirks of its own and I’ve found it worth the money), and the time saved due to flexibility in routing is worth it.

Anyhow, the plan with this bay is to use it at the bottom of a rack for some synths and FX that I’m keeping but don’t see as much regular use, thus opening up other patchbay space for routing audio and CV in and out of my interfaces and bringing in some other rack gear I’d been neglecting, as well as cutting down on some long cable clutter.

I missed this controller that's been out for a while, or didn't watch any demos. It's on the list now.

Tactile and wobbly - my favourite combination.

Im in no way affiliated with this shop but just got an email from Andertons to say they have an epic deal on new soundcraft GB8 48 channel mixers if anyone was thinking of getting an analog mixer this month, reduced by £3000 to £1299. Not a clue if its any good but thought id pass it on if anyone interested. Sorry if not supposed to be here but thought best place to post it.

FYI on the long run the PX3000 connections will corrode and the patches will get wonky because of the switches.
IMHO you'd better off with the Neutrik NYS SPP-L1. I've replaced all my shabby PX3000 with the Neutrik ones and never looked back.
