Small hardware sampler/sequencers?

Small hardware sampler/sequencers?

Help me Slutz, you’re my only hope.

I need a small, easily portable sampler/sequencer with audio in, sample editing, velocity-sensitive pads, and a decent amount of storage.

Something I can sketch out song ideas on - in a variety of time sigs - and mess around with found sound or a mic. Possibly looking at connecting to a Keystep, but that remains to be seen, as I don’t have one of those yet.

Other gear I would be taking with me: field recorder, and one or two mics. Also, an iPad.

So, should I be looking at iPad apps instead? Or indeed, VST options? I do have an old-ish laptop I could consider lugging around.

Thanks. And I hope my question makes sense, and isn’t too dumb.

Truth is, I’m not used to making music when not at home. IOW, without a ton of gear, including a spec’d out desktop PC. The whole idea is a bit foreign.

I already have a field recorder, which is well worn, but still works. Might pick up a Keystep, like I said. For another purpose, but it seems pretty small and light, so...

It’s down to a small bit o’ tech that can be a decent sampler/sequencer, or yeah, my iPad... or a not-very-powerful laptop.

I would not recommend the MPC500 to anyone unless all he wants to do is finger drumming. I sold mine. This is only my opinion however.

Multiple time signatures takes SP's out of consideration. It really comes down to what you want to use as sound sources for your musical sketches. Are you planning on using all samples, or a combination of samples and synths?
