Problems with filtering

I've a dilemma when it comes to filtering drums especially snares and hi-hats.

I know it's good practise to take out the searing high-ends of these sounds as they can appear quite un-natural when going for a balanced mix but whenever I attempt to do this the sound just becomes completely muffled.

I've tried so many of logic's filter and eq options but it always results in a complete "submerged" sound no matter how gentle the slop or un-invasive the shelf

Is there a better way to go about removing harsh high end from these sounds without directly "submerging" them?

Leave the highs intact then roll the top end off a little in mastering.

Make sure the hi hats aren't too loud during mixing

When mixing drums, imo, you're better off boosting frequencies rather than removing them (assuming you left yourself headroom to do so).
