Modern Pedal FX Algorithms VS Older Rack FX

I've been wondering about the FX algorithms/quality in FX Pedals from Empress, Meris & Strymon.

Specifically in regards to the quality compared to older Rack Fx units, like the Eventide Eclipse & Lexicon PCM 92 (and older models)

I've got an old TC Electronic Fireworx, but the individual fx blocks sound pretty dated compared to modern pedals.

For some reason i've been curious about PCM 92, but wondered if i'd get better results from buying & chaining modern fx pedals.

I've not heard/seen any demos of the PCM 92, to make comparisons.

Have todays FX algorithms moved beyond the capabilities & quality of the older rack fx?

Cheers.
