Early on, when I hit a similar wall, I loaded up a preset with a fairly complete/complex drumkit. First I programmed a loop using the basics I knew already. Then I'd move through each additional sound, forcing myself to add the sound to the loop, in a way where it didn't clash too badly or sound too "off". When all the sounds was in, I'd do a 2nd pass, removing and adding some stuff, say if I had realised I wanted a rimshot instead of a tom on a particular step.
I did that a couple of times with different kits, bpms, base rhythmic ideas etc.
All things considered, it didn't cost me all that much time and effort. But after that, I had a much better grasp on which sounds did what, and where they should go to achieve what I wanted.
