There's nothing more credible than the schematics of the service manual. It's 8bit. Trust us.

Sure. It´s RA3. The L in RGSD16L-104G defines the circuit type. A cascading resistor divider network, AKA resistor ladder, AKA R2R.
The bits are transferred from the Sound ROM to the R2R in parallel. From the LSB to the MSB, just count D0 to D7. It´s 8!!!

the samples are actually 4,000-bit
but it still sounds like crap next to a 707
