That doesn't sound great. I've seen it working on the beat with Ableton, maybe try sending the PC message earlier on the MPC? Think you can do this, but never owned one. The patterns do retain their length when switching though do they, not just 16 steps?

Patterns keep the original tr8 length, to be fair i made program changes from one program tho the same one (by mistake) at the same time I was sending midi data to the tr8 from the MPC. to get the sound working I had to move flrward about 3 or 4 ticks the hit in the MPC to have the sound playing.

So it was a "dirty test", I'll try in the afternoon in a proper way

Ok, made some more serious testing

1st. Changing program keeps length and bank chaining

2nd. There is a noticeable lag changing program (1 or 2ms?), so the first note of the pattern will be lost unless you make the program change some ticks before. Bad news

Someone posted a all blank/808 template backup file for all patterns and kits.

I’d like to have something like that, but with my own template. Is there any way to do this easily, maybe by using a pc, or do you have to do this manually one by one?

Its just a hassle to start a new project with a blank pattern with your favorite template kit which are both (pattern+kit) saved to a different location than the original locations, etc. Would be much easier if a kit is saved per pattern, without the possibility to link a pattern to a different kit. So when you load a different kit into a pattern, it should “clone” the kit into the pattern instead of linking to it imo...

As far I understood your question I think the best way to do it is creating your "template" pattern, with a 808 kit, copy it to all the banks in a pattern and them, copy the original pattern to all the other patterns. The problem is you will have to save all patterns individually, but nothing too much time consuming.

I used to want the kit and pattern saved 1:1, but I found out a good reason why it's not that way. You can develop one really good kit, your "signature sound", then use it across multiple patterns. In a live setting, this is pretty awesome because you can switch between multiple patterns with no breaks, and using the same kit is really helpful for a seamless transition.

I finally got a decent mixer with lots of inputs and was thinking of using the individual outs of the TR to full advantage. However, I'm really new at this and don't know what I'm doing. Can anyone give me some tips and advice about the best drums to split out and what to do with them, in terms of EQ and effects?

Thanks!

Experimentation is key here, there’s no way wrong to do it.

Yep, specially for external FX and eq. For volume the form factor and faders of the Tr8 are perfect

I think I made a big mistake and I'm hoping there's a way to recover from it... I was working on a pattern and tweaked some parts of the kit, then I hit shift+write and saved everything. Later on, I noticed that the kit wasn't the copy that I thought it was, but was kit 001, the TR-808 default. I like to leave the pre-loaded kits pristine and work with copies.

Does anyone know if I can restore just this one kit without wiping out all the other kit changes and copies that I've made? I know there's a factory reset for kits only, but I want just this one kit reset.

I'm prepared for the worst but hoping for the best!

You can just do it from scratch in less than a minute. The very first sample in each category is the 808 one, in bd, snare etc. Just select then, and use shift to quickly change sample category!

I think you can import a kit. I will try to export it and send it.

I was just thinking of doing this. Wonderig if it would be possible to use 2 of these cords connected on 1 powerbank to power both my TR-8S and Mc-707...

What is the size of the TR8S's DC in jack?

The local computer store has cables with sizes 2.1mm and 2.5mm and I don't know which one to buy. I know that it could be measured but I don't know what measure it is. Is it the size of the hole in the middle? Then I would go for 2.1mm.

Wasn't sure from much research whether the variation buttons stayed saved to the pattern or were lost and just served as a performance option.

On the verge of getting one today and will be sequencing the pattern change from a Squarp Pyramid so this is a bit of a deal breaker for my workflow if it defaults to one bar on Pattern change.

I'm sure it must but just need to check as the omission of midi control of the variations seemed an odd thing to omit so it got me doubting.

Thanks very much.
Hey - FYI - using program changes to change patterns on the TR8s causes a tiny glitch as the pattern changes. Making it unusable. I’m using a squarp too.

The pattern seems to change instantly instead of waiting until the end of the current pattern.

Roland TR8s doing covers of songs without any other instruments

Thought I’d share a video of someone doing a cover of eifel 65 blue solely on a Roland TR8s. He/she has done a lot of videos of the unit if anyone is interested in seeing how versatile the TR8s is.

I wanted to share this perfect riser that I found for the TR-8S. It's a great fit, and is very adjustable height-wise. You can even add tilt by making the rear legs longer than the front, and the TR doesn't slide. It's very stable, no rocking while performing on the TR. I'm very happy with it! It's a 3M monitor stand, I bought it on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/30BNFZN

This is a nice performance:

Best part is that if you turn on the subtitles they explain what they're doing.

I think this nicely illustrates the kind of playing the TR-8S lends itself to, just pay attention to how quick and tactile the whole process is.

Same person has a tutorial explaining some of the transition tricks they use:

this machine is super easy to get up and running. i consider it a work horse that gets the job done. outside of the ACB kits it comes with, i loaded up most classic machines and a bunch of custom kits ive been using.
