Does anybody else have an obsolete synth fetish? Keyboard Synthesizers

Guilty.

I love my stuff but it's all "obsolete" (all but my Blofeld Keys).
I just ended up with shizzle pile of mostly used gear for cheap.

I live in VA/Rompler Heaven, or Hell, I'm not sure.

Korg MS2000B Rack
Love to get inspired by what folks do with the Microkorg, so I end up coming back to this one

Alesis Fusion x2 6HD and 8HD
6HD has been a gem, 8HD has some glitches but nothing major..I don't use the workstation functions much and just play them. I much prefer the 6HD as its a synth action and the 8HD action is not my fave piano action to put it mildly.

Korg Wavestation SR
So much potential and so little time to spend programming it, so mine has a bunch of not so great presets on it. Maybe I can make some metallic sounding space music on it!

Roland SH-32
Love this thing, bummed I waited too long to get another one since got mine used and the dude I bought it from had been wrenching on the cutoff knob 24/7 now they are fetching some high prices on Ebay...Can be smooth but also makes annoying gritty squeals.

Kurzweil K2000 V3
Just a plain old beautiful instrument. Nice keybed and the fake analogy stuff really sounds good for a digital synth. Got it for 200 Bucks from a studio that rented it for gigs but it is in amazing shape, praise be to the God of keyboard techs..

Roland JV2080 with a few cards in it.
The Vintage synth card is the bomb, the Mellotron, CS-80 and VP330 patches sound darn nice IMO. Found a EP patch on the world card of all places I also really like.

Alesis Micron.
There is a lot under the hood for very little money these days...if you program it it can do some amazing things. Not sure what's wrong with me but I spend a good deal of time trying to coax new sounds out of this. Horrible keys, bad velocity sensitivity wobbly sliders, love the engine. I swear it sounds nothing like the Alesis Fusion to me...I think the VA engine is not the same but some say it is...?
I have a Arp Odyssey Ultravoxish patch on this I'm particularly proud of.

Roland M-VS1
Single Rack version of the Vintage synth card...got this for 100.00 brand new in the box last year..it had been sitting in the back of a music store forever...damn was I stoked to find it.

Roland RD700SX
This is a bitchin' controller IMO my fave piano like key feel Love the way it's laid out to split sounds etc. Ultimate keys card really makes it shine as it has a good CP70 patch and some other great EP sounds. Also some good synth strings. Weighs more than Gorilla..

Got an Ensoniq ESQ-1 laying around (paid 100.00)...There is a guy named Michael Daniels (mik300z on youtube)
that makes this thing absolutely shine...
YouTube
I can't, and it shows he is super talented at playing and programming and I'm just not. Still, its a unique beast for sure.

Clearly I'm nutz.

The end.

Couple of years ago I very nearly started down the path of collecting all the E-mu modules, picking up a Proteus 1 that originally had a dead battery, then a Proteus 2 with XR expansion... There's a Wavestation SR and JV-1080 too, and slightly less "obsolete", an original Motif Rack... Also an early Muse Receptor which needed a little TLC before it booted up properly (cable or two had come adrift inside)... I remember the good old days when I only wanted to buy new things, then bought an out of print book via eBay, then an album, and before I could stop myself started religiously trawling the sound modules section every few days to see if anything interesting came up...

I'm not sure about the VA engine in the Fusion.. but the Micron is the Alesis Ion engine (with I think a couple more features, although obviously far less knobs).. the Akai Miniak adds slightly more on the Micron too I think. No wonder you get lost in there

Two weeks ago I red your message, then got an eye on this V50 I didn't know about.

Damn I said, that would made a nice 5 oct midi keyboard for nothing. And if it's really the engine of the TX81z, it would be able to replace it. (the fourth TX81z I have, after buy & sell every 2 years...)

I checked the internet and one was on sell 170e between work and home. I went to check it out the same day and went with it, the black keyboard between my legs on the scooter (no joke)

Man I have to thanks you a lot for your message.

The TX81z can now go in peace, I have transfered the sysex voices in the V50 : yes it's the same, but with 16 voices, pitch env, effect (nice verb & delays), a drum machine & a sequencer, anice keyboard & wheels + the quick edit mode & the data slider to make subtle or crazy variations.
And not to say that with the nice panel, buttons & slider you make some patch so quick and with joy. TX was a bit less a calling machine for patch session...

Anyway, thanks for your post, it was helpful for the seller and for me !

Definitely for the seller, 170 Euro is quite a lot for a V50. It proves again that mentioning any Synth on GS drives prices up.

considering the seller put his v50 to sell more than a month ago & certainly didn't red this topic, i can't see a relation.

How would you pay for a v50? À TX81z is 70-90e, so I was happy with his price when looking to all the features I will win with the v50...

He put it up more than a month ago and it didn't sell until you bought it which is a clear sign that it was overpriced.

You only bought it because you heard about it here on GS which proves my point that raving about a synth on GS drives prices up as it makes people buy the overpriced synths that have been sitting on the market for a while, simply because the overpriced ones are the only ones always available (the ones priced fairly get bought quickly by people who have saved searches with automatic notification when new ones come on the market).

I'm not looking for a V50, but if I was I wouldn't pay much more than for the rack version, so maybe 100 Euro. Rack versions are actually often more in demand because space is an issue for many buyers.

But anyway, if you enjoy it that's all that counts for you. Have fun with it!

you would be surprised. In the last three months on US eBay, two V50s have sold at a bit under $300 ($299 and $265), and one in November sold for $400 when you factor in the shipping. There was also one sold twice for about $100 each time, but it was barely functional. So 170 euro doesn't sound out of whack.

By these criteria, I guess my Virus KC, Nord Wave, and Yamaha FS1R would be considered obsolete, but I love them, they sound amazing, and they're keepers! The Virus line is still going, the FM part of the FS1R was added to the Montage, and Nord Wave still loads updated samples from their website, so I'm not sure how "obsolete" they are.

There is no rack version of the v50. And if you think the tx81z is, then you've never played one. I have them both and love them. But the v50 is like having tx81z programmer controlling 2 racks. Throw in some rx drums and yammy effects inside a tank with keys and then you'll have something close to a 50. Never mind the lower frequencies and easy editing from the panel without a monitor in sight. 170 euros is a fair price and I would've snatched up a second one for that amount easy. I love it when people think great things suck. Makes them cheaper for me.

Lets face up the facts fellas - soft synths are like porn and hardware is like a real girl.

(Apologies to all the women on the forum - I assume by default that these threads are 100% dorky dudes).
