TR606 Track writing? Drum Machines & Samplers

TR606 Track writing?

wondering if a Track can be erased/deleted, or what's a
good quick method to initialize it. new to track writing.

looking at this:
Roland TR-606 Manual - Tracks

i've got the gist of entering patterns (will try entering
blocks/chains next time) - though still not sure about
entering track end marker (also next time).

i suppose there isn't a track clear as with patterns?
kept ending up with some stray unwritten pattern in
there (after leaving batteries out, all memories scrambled).

do you just set it to write and then go DC, before entering
your first patterns, and then go DC again?

everytime I turn mine on there is some weird off kilter patterns in there that get me scratching my head everytime how to delete and start fresh again, the old Roland manuals are terrible with their written logic..

well that's bcs it dumps its memory if it doesn't have batteries in.
you have to start again.
i think there's a mod to add a CR lithium cell to retain patterns on
power down.

sussed out the quick way to clear patterns last night anyway,
and reset length. it's a bit weird, because you forget you're
probably in Play at that point, so you press Pattern clear and
nothing happens:

with it stopped, put it in Write, hold Function, the pattern number
you want to clear, and then press pattern clear. then Run, and
that's when you can press Function and choose the pattern length,
last step. then you should have a cleared pattern running eg: 16 steps.

have to check if it can clear blocks of 4 patterns this way.
you can enter blocks of patterns into tracks, which is cool.
really like the block/chain writing. was using Tap mainly for that.

i'll try again later, see if i can suss out how to initialize a Track properly.
probably quite simple.

i have done the cr2032 mod to both my tb and tr606.. it will last for a couple of years.. all you need is a 1n4148 diode, a 2032 battery, a battery holder and some double sided adhesive tape to fix the holder somewhere convenient..

can you show us a quick piccy of where/how?

about the Track thing: how do you reset a Track?
just put a DC in straight away, and then start entering
patterns, followed by a DC? (if i'm thinking about this
correctly...)

also: can i survive if i sell my tr606 ?
would i be happy with a tt606 drumdrone?

I only bought mine for the hats so as nothing else does them properly I'll keep mine..

No and no.

Unless you like a super clean, well behaved version of the 606, in which case get a drumdrone.

For me it's those hats but also the snare, which I very much prefer to an 808. The toms are also amazing. In fact, add a boss hand clapper and you just got yourself one of the best drum machines ever.

cz' i'm checking it out in close atm. and have a good
price for it in a couple of days. unless i duck out
but i need the money.. i have a dinsynced DR110 ..
but the programming on that isn't even comparable.

i agree that the toms are great. i would like a few more
sounds to f*** about with.. agree with the trig out thing,
that's important.. would like it better with a bit of control,
with some sound mods.. you know, like some frequency
control on the hihats - i find the cymbal a bit useless like
that, could be so good with an envelope and a frequency
control.

i really like this programming. but i can get that with the tr626,
to a point, i've sussed that out pretty well now. also like MIDI,
because i've ended up needing a dinsync bridge.. which the
drumstation has ... that's the wider picture. oh yeah, there are
2 tr626s but i think i know why.. - one of them was
only 70eu, is part of it, but in my bad head it makes sense,
although in practice running 2 together probably won't happen
(forget the 626 sounds, it isn't about that, although one of them
was destined for a circuitbend - which i don't really agree with ...
i'm gonna have zerocrossing telling me i need meds in a minute,
i don't, i need a different situation.. fcuk selling anything..)

anyway you get the picture. shall i try and sell him the DR110
instead? i'm rather proud of that one, managed not to fcuk it up
when i modded it.

i'm thinking about other things with more sounds tbh. the acidlab
606 seems good, the miami does too, and i'll never have another
808. .. i mean... if i midi'd up the DR110...

2 trig out, though... that's quite compelling.

Can't tell you what you should do, but personally I would keep the DR110 for just the hats and the clap, if nothing else.

here is one of my RE-303 where I also did the mod, it's basically the same with the 606.. that's the only one I found on my pc.. you have to connect the positive pin of the battery holder to the anode of the diode and the cathode to the cathodes of d38/d39.. the negative pin of the battery holder somewhere to ground and that's it.

about the track mode, the 606 was the first piece of gear I bought and still have, but I have never used track mode :D I am gonna have a look, maybe I can figure it out, it's also a bit tricky on the 303 when you do it for the first time, probably it's similar in the 606..

ok, sussed it. nice and easy.

best explained by DinSync Info - skip to 5.35

that's where it become a rockin' drum machine
suddenly becomes much more interesting.

one cool feature is that if you write over a 4-pattern 'chain' in
PatternEdit mode, you can enter that chain in a single operation
in TrackWrite by holding down the first and last as you press Next.
get a few Tracks written quickly and jam those instead of individual
patterns.

another little question: what should i be seeing on VUs out of the 'output'
jack with a stereo adapter? looks a bit weak on one side, and it's the
same on both out of the headphones. it's mono isn't it? but headphones
would be stereo...

ha-haaa.. you can switch from track to pattern and back
without stopping.. go in and edit a pattern, and then go back
to your track... i read about this.. know what they meant now...

this is a wild thing. what would it be like with some tone mods...
or a bank of CV inputs... seriously having those 2nd thoughts now..
you can break right out of that dull 4/4 boom tish boom tish trip
with rolling toms, and place accents where you need them, and
take them off the obvious places where you had them.
badboy breaks.

still have to figure out how to chain Tracks...
reading this (near bottom of page):

606 Manual: Advanced Course

which doesn't explain it very well at all. explanation of how to do
'S' and 'DS' is confusing too.

boo hoo well it's gone. went according to plan,
but i can't say i feel great about selling a little
classic. it has great programming, and really
good dynamics considering its limitations.
really deserves and needs the output and tone
mods imo.

**so what are the alternatives now?**

yeah saw/heard that. sounds crisper. 808-ish.
sort of starts you thinking about a Miami though.

got anything against this one? some interesting features.
someone said ' a cleaned-up tr606' but i don't think that's
a bad thing; i found the hihats a bit distorted on the real
one compared to a dr110. maybe something's lost in the
programming (and stuff added too). no trig outs? also
read that the audio outs can trig, but i think not at
+15v.

I have never really spent much time listening to tt606 demos.. if you don't need it to sound exactly like a tr606 you won't do much wrong with it probably.. otherwise wait for the re606, mods and individual outs won't be a big issue to do, but I don't really know when it will happen, since gilbert comes first.
