Do the built in EQs in Ableton Live suck?

I don't have any high end EQ plugins to compare them to....

Will a UAD or other high end plugs blow away the Ableton EQs?

How about the Live compressors?

(I tried to get at the same question here but my post was confusingly worded..)

Short answer, yes. The other ones will blow them away. However, that is why the other ones are hundreds of dollars, and the built in ones are free

Download some demos of nice 3rd party eq's and do an A/B.

Cheers,
Tim

Edit: same for the compressors.

They aren't great, but they are usable. If you're using it, and have to ask if they suck (because you aren't hearing them suck?), then they don't suck and are usable.

If you hear them audbily screwing up the audio and not doing their job, then they suck.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The reason I can't hear if they suck is because I am a producer/songwriter and and not an engineer.... in my songs I use layers of thick lo-fi samples and have to use EQ to place them in the arrangement.

I find at a certain point I am "mixing" as a part of composition.....

using alot of EQ (to change the sound) but

my ears aren't trained to hear if they suck

I just wanted to make sure that at some point I don't learn that the Live EQs suck compared to something else and have to spend a ton of time to swap them out before final mix with a plugin that doesn't suck....

I had this problem when I was routing synths into an old Mackie board...

then I read Gearslutz

and stopped that

And then I heard the difference (HUGE)

Gearslutz has helped me

learn alot about what sucks

I'll stick with the live EQ

Thanks guys!

i would stick with the eqs until you here it or know what you want.
if you dont here it how could you mix better with something more transparent?
the perception creates the music.
in my humble opinion.

Again I doubt that they suck enough to kill the songs. I used to worry the same about the default EQs and comps in Logic and Protools. They were fine in the end. Nothing magical, but they do their thing well enough.

To a degree, if you can't tell (as a musician or producer, not an engineer) if the EQ's are ok, then 99.99% of the end listeners won't be able to tell the difference either.

This is what I needed to hear. Once again, to all you Gearslutz for keeping me on the right path. I'm glad I can spend the time/cash on songs/instruments.
