Monotribe madness

percussion track throughout Monotribe #4 stand-alone no midi, no CV
next up is Monotribe 1,2,3 CV controlled by MS-20K for 3 oscillator Tribezilla
Monophonic Blofeld added into mix as second sonority

Although recorded with no effects internal or external I decided to post it in
Audacity, reversed original track, added reverb, reversed it, added vocoder!

I definitely recommend the V2 overlay from styleflip.com, because it has labels on the panel for all of those firmware V2 functions and is pretty nice quality.

Edited to add: there's a link to the styleflip.com page in the first post.

What I would like is a way to midi up my Monotribe.
I bought one of those cheaply made kits and the small internal cable broke
at the connector before I even got it connected.
I wrote off the $55 in lesson in cheaply made SMT kits.
For now I am using CV only, but I have a perFOURmer sitting
unused as it waits for its MS20>Monotribe MIDI>perFOURmer gateway.

EDIT: I can get it working with a laptop, with MS20 USB to laptop,
UM-one to MIDI to perFOURmer, but then it isn't OTB

If you know how to solder, check out my DIY blog article for a MIDI board you can build yourself. I got the schematic from a person that used to offer them on Gearslutz and stopped selling them.. Works well for me. Not sure why it's not linked on the first page. Unless it was perhaps Altitude909 but that link is dead apparently when I just clicked it. Anyway you can see the schematic and layout in my blog. EDIT: buy Altitude909's kit if you can get it. Take a whack at my layout if not, I guess.

At my age, my near vision is shot and glasses won't help.
I think I have a line on a midied monitribe, so I hope I can get it.
Bottom line is, 4 is not enough for my plans......

I have the Amazing Machines MIDI from Brazil, works great, very easy, very nice build quality, can't say enough good things about it

The 4 Monotribes with an MS-20 gated with the synch-out.
Other sounds Waldorf Blofeld
post done in Audacity
Starts Monotribe drums
then synth drums on a Monotribe
MS-20M gated
then the MTs join in- full feedback loop

Only non VCO element is that Blofeld

The last amorphous sounds you here are the Blofeld

Does anybody know if it's possible to control a Monotribe with an external keyboard (preferably a Korg Microkey Air)? I also have a Microbrute but can't figure out how to use it for this purpose?! Thanks

That is/what the MIDI I/O mod would be for.

Unfortunately your Micro Key Korg is only USB so you would need a different set of keys with a MIDI DIN OUT jack on them.

CV out of the Microbrute will work too!

Just to be really clear for others, the Monotribe supports both Hz/V and 1V/Oct.

The Step 2 button toggles between the two settings when in the CV/Gate Setup mode.

It also supports active high or active low gate polarity, for what it's worth.

It can be set to Hz/V or V/octave, V_trig or S_trigger.

I can run my Monotribes off my MS-20 (Hz/V, S_trigger)
or my '14 (V/octave, V_trigger)

Both scenarios are stable, and these use modified
AV cables TRRS.
Many thanks, the attached file is particularly useful

Monkey, your bog is very cool. Have you got the link for the page with the monotribe mod?

From the desk of DANTONE / WAC (Wiley Audio Corporation)

that should be the one you're looking for.

Reminds me that I haven't posted a blog lately... I want to do one on Tube Screamers and maybe a Fuzz Face one... hmmm

I do the odd bit of DIY myself, though my electrical skills are basic at best (it's like trying to learn a new language or something). I'll keep you in mind if I have any dumb questions .

I just finished this yesterday - it's a stereo, balanced true bypass. I ended up using two 4PDT switches because stereo + balanced meant 8 poles!! No wonder I was having trouble finding a commercial one.

I'm not sure how I missed linking that one in the original post of this thread. Apparently there's a statute of limitations on how long old posts remain editable because I no longer have an edit button for that one, which is a bummer. I was going to update it to add that link.

Yeah I have noticed that about editing older posts as well. I guess they are afraid we'll all get second regrets and delete everything we ever have said! I've had the thought a few times...

It's a good DIY though if anyone wants to have a try. Reading this far in the thread, maybe so...

Now my 2 CV OCD are in, here are my short term and longer term goals
Short term:
need power supplies for both CV OCDs and plenty of 1/4" to 1/8" adapters
as all 4 CV input devices are TRRS to 1/4" (for my MS-20kit) and rather than
resolder the lot, I will adapt to the eurorack-jack standard on the CV-OCD.
-more patch cords!
-with my new 2404VLZ4 I now have enough inputs for all my Monotribes and other stuff.

The longer plan:
MS-20kit#1 as controller-it's two CV - S_trigger controlled Monotribes stay as is.

MS-Kit #1 USB out to Kenton USB to MIDI Hub (need to buy)
(I assume the MS-20kit is USB compliant as earlier experiments with my laptop requires
no drivers whatsoever)

Kenton MIDI out to MIDI THRU box, midi thru 1 goes to CV OCD box 1, which goes to MS-20kit 2 as REAL duophonic (just like a CS-40m)
(requires V_trig to S_trig adapter made out of 10k resistor and NPN transistor)

CV OCD box 2 to Monotribes 3, 4 and now 5 to act as chords when I play them on controller MS-20kit.

Will build in stages starting with getting the MTs online first, then the second MS-20kit.

Wish me luck!

I've examined the schematic, and the placement on the board, and he is
feeding the MBs CV into the wiper of the Cutoff Pot on the Monotribe.

I would only change it to add a 92k resistors (what I have on hand and close
to the values around the VCF)

As I said earlier I know what I need to do, but soldering up to even one SMD part
should be a challenge. I could use the EG1 out of MS-20kit for testing purposes,
as it is the only synth I have that outputs envelope CVs.

Has anyone else noticed that there is a huge lag between note input and midi out on the Monotribe?

For example MS20>CV/Gate>Monotribe>MIDI OUT.

If I press a C on the MS20 controller, it takes like 2 presses of the next note until I gets to that next note.
I have the Brazillian version. I was hoping to use this setup as a Hz/V to MIDI, but it seems too clunky!

Any words on this?
