Personally I'd lose a bit of acoustic treatment to get some natural light in there.. But it's nice and neat

I've actually just installed some led lighting strips around the entire room hidden behind the picture rails which really gives me that natural light feels.

Fair enough

Having spent years in windowless boxes (one of my previous studios was at the bottom of an elevator shaft!) these days I need to see sky and trees

I think you might be underselling it a bit. I see more stuff on the shelf and reflected in the window.

finally, i've done with rebuilding my workplace

what i have to say: desk matters.

many of us underestimate it, thinking that gear is what really matters, and let it stand on what's available. i thought more or less this way before, until i bought this desk.

and this was vast improvement of my workflow.

now i have most of my gear always at hand, and it takes only 1—5 minutes to fire up any configuration. (but i already know what to improve, especially for MIDI connections.)

so, pics.
normally unused gear is covered with dense fabric to protect it from dust, but i took it all off to make pics look more interesting.
i also have to use some crappy cables at the moment — never mind.

(1) everything's hidden:
Gear Porn thread - pics of your slutty setups-img_0362-9x.jpg

(2) composing workflow: Pyramid, Launchpad Pro, Electribe 2, Axoloti
Gear Porn thread - pics of your slutty setups-img_0367-8x.jpg

(3) sound design workflow: Remote Zero SL, Launchpad Pro, Axoloti, and the patient, DSI Tetra in this case.
if you wonder what's the software on the screen — it's Edisyn, which supports DSI Pro '08, so i'm curious whether i can modify it to support Tetra completely

(4a) all-VA live/jam rig: Novation Nova, Blofeld, Electribe 2, Pyramid, Launchpad pro, Beatstep, two non-visible Axoloti, Zoom LiveTrak L-12

(4b) just for comparison: same rig, previous desk

(5) goa trance live/jam rig: DSI Tetra, Blofeld, Electribe 2, Pyramid, Launchpad pro, Beatstep, two non-visible Axoloti, Zoom LiveTrak L-12

(6) backpack-unfriendly live/jam rig: Command Station, Virus B, Pyramid, Launchpad pro, non-visible Axoloti, Zoom LiveTrak L-12

there are some minor things to improve (moving the desk a bit to the center of the room to get proper speaker positioning, using only proper cables, rearranging MIDI connectivity in less fiddly fashion — that's what i got Midiface 8x8 for).

but in general, if this workplace is not superb, i don't know what on earth is superb at all.

i don't use L-12 when not recording — it would be an overkill.

yes, i'm sure.
typically i use 2—3 sound generating boxes at once.
and i'm definitely not intended to bring everything at once with me when i'll have more frequent gigs. all those setup are designed with gigs in mind.

That was my reaction too. Anything that isn't convenient to use, I just don't end up using.

Looks great. I have a hole in my setup and a Xerxes would fit in perfectly. Any idea on a release date yet?

I think it's more that different people work in different ways and with different end goals. Nothing wrong with that. I also have a setup with the mentality of trying to keep everything I might want to use ready to go. The last thing I want is to juggle things when I'm trying to be creative. My goal is to stay as focused as possible whenever I enter the studio.

indeed.

when i had a period with more gigs, i would have live setup at the back of the mixroom, connection/audio/gear wise completely independent from the usual, main daw/synth setup where i work/compose.

in the past, i tried shifting things arround for a while, to have one system accomodate two drastically different use cases - and it was a total mess. in the studio and in my head too .

so when its completely separate i am relaxed (especially since jams/practicing for the gig usually involved one or two other people).

i don't see any need to separate „live gear“ vs „studio gear“, except for using another mixer/recorder and cable set for gigs.

my gear is mostly chosen with ~40L backpack in mind. Command Stations, Virus B and Zoom L-12 are exceptions, but anyway well usable for gigs in/near my home city, when more size/weight is not a problem.

Very nice. Curious as to how you managed to have the Xerxes and its neighbor angled so perfectly ! Also, the two ribbon controllers: I assume the red one is a Haken mini, what's the other one and how do you integrate the three controllers in your system ? Thanks.

Aah, good eye. Both units have the rear cases currently removed so they just lay on top with the boards open resting on voice cards (since I'm working on the circuits). Perfect angle. But if I put the cases on I'll need to use some custom rack brackets to angle them properly. This Xerxes unit is the first prototype we built, it has SMD voice cards just like the prebuilt Kijimi next to it, so they both rest at the same angle. But Xerxes with this form isn't going to be shipped, it'll be even slimmer with a desktop form factor.

The other ribbon is Doepfer R2M and it's connected to Midiboard's Midi-IN, which merges the Midi data with the keyboard. Works perfect; this is what I normally use. It's very close to CS-80 functionality. Midiboard's output then goes to mio10 and routes anywhere.

The Haken Continuumini connects via USB to my DAW and I reroute it to whatever synth I need from there via mio10. Of course I don't use them both at the same time as they are very different animals.

The CS-15 at the top is hooked to a Kenton Pro-2000 Mk2 CV box so I can control it via MIDI from mio10.

– Pyramid
– Electribe 2
– Blofeld
– one of these: Nova || Tetra || PreenFM2
– Launchpad Pro
– Beatstep
– two Axoloti
– stands & cables.

what i'm NOT carrying in the bag: Zoom LiveTrak L-12 – it's slightly bigger and does not fit. so, i'll buy Zoom R24 – 8 channels is still OK for decent multitrack recording.

Been a couple years. Keeps piling up when stuff doesn't break

Overflow and stuff being worked on still >>

Yes, there is a ton of synths, I've sold a few and most of these were bought broken and fixed. Forgot the T8 in the other room but that would be excessive. All of it in use here
