Replace Octapad - Midi Trigger Pad?

After 25 years my Octapd is dying. I went to the local n00b trap (GC) and they didn't really have anything except an Alesis that he said breaks easily. I don't need built in sounds and would like to hook up my Shark pedal w/a 1/4" input. This is just for laying down groove ideas that will be replaced w/real drums. I don't want to spend more $300 or so.

What would be wrong with the Alesis? I have an Alesis Performance Pad lying around that I used sparingly before. Does the job for playing the software and you can connect a few pedals to it. Perhaps he meant that he would break it easily (apparently he was not a gentle drummer)?

He just said that they get returned a lot. I'm not taking it on the road or anything, so maybe it will be fine.

we have an Alesis where I teach lessons. Kids banging on it all the time. Never had a problem. The pads are a little small but it feels a LOT more like "playing the drums" than the Octapad ever does.
