Trying to get a Van Halen type snare sound

Prepare to point and laugh at my Van Haleny snare sound attempt haha. Part 2 has some mixing info.

Van Halen Drum Setup

If you are looking for the drum tone of of their first album I would definitely give this produce like a pro video a watch. They show the track notes from the original recording sessions and recreate the sound with in the same live Room at Sunset Sound where the original was tracked.

I have a related story that may help. He uses gigantic clubs for sticks. My cousin was in another band, they were playing the same event. He had to borrow sticks from him. My cousin uses a 5B, I use a 747B, Van Halen uses a fricking club that is about 1.5X's the weight of a standard drumstick. The size variation from the 747B from the 5B, about that much size increase again if not more in stick size.

And Alex always plays rimshots on the backbeats, which is hugely important for that sound.
