New drum shield idea?

New drum shield idea?

First, I HATE drum shields. Looking for a good compromise.

Here is a photo of a plexi disc idea I saw at a concert.... You can see that they are positioned to help block in the direction where the lead vocal is.

Looks very simple, cut a plexi circle and put it on a cymbal stand.

Has anyone tried this?

I'm guessing based on the silence that nobody else has seen these before either.

I suspect they would be fairly subtle in their effect but might knock down cymbal wash etc into nearby vocal mics.

Hopefully I can find someone who has tried this. I'll maybe crosspost into some other drum forums.

In the interim, I would appreciate any insight before taking the time to build these.

Never heard one in use, but I suspect that they would be very subtle in their effect. The Smokin Ace one at least wraps around the cymbal. The other ones look to me like wishful thinking, oh if I just put a small piece of plexiglass right "where the sound comes out" everything will be quieter.

Thanks, the Smokin Ace looks interesting, and they aren't particularly expensive.

A good touring client list suggests they are worthwhile.... Adele, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Daughtry, Breaking Benjamin, etc.....

Much appreciated, will give these a try.

these won't totally keep cymbals out of vocal mics, but they do reduce the intensity without the killing the vibe of the drums themselves. Useful tools IME.

That's what I'd suspect. Last visit with Hot Tuna Jack Casady had a single plate like that up fairly high as a cymbal shield.
