Looper - Sampler/Sequencer , what's the difference?

Hi guys

I have owned samplers for years now and I am getting into the world of DIY devices (based on tiny computers such as the Raspberry Pi)....

And I would like to understand the differences between a looper and a sampler/sequencer (like the MPC) ?

One of my goals is to build sort of like an MPC with my own little custom things...

As I understand it a looper does just that - it only loops what you put in using layers. A sampler will play back the sample as desired. The MPC's built in sequencer will let you trigger a sample whenever you like - a looper will only play it back the 4 (or however many) bar loop that you've recorded but will allow you to mute layers.

I could be wrong as my only experience with loopers is watching people use them.
