DeEsser : Hardware vs Software?

I have a pair of DBX 902's de-essers. I can tell you that my waves and pro tools de-essers don't come close. The DBX 902's seem to add air while de-essing. I'm not sure what it is that's going on under the hood, but they just plain a$$ sound better.
