Drexciya

Well, first of all I think they deserve their own thread here on GS.. they rarely (if ever) get mentioned ..Drexciya (James Stinton RIP) and all the offsprings of Heinrich Mueller:

Dopplereffect
Der zykel
Japanese Telecom
Arpanet
Glass Domain
Translussion

Just forget about JUSTICE and all that "new" **** for awhile and jump staight into the malstrom of some of the finest musically and raw uncompromising electro that has come out of motorcity Detroit EVER!

here´s a blog dedicated to Drexciya for more info:

Drexciya Research Lab

and here are some examples

YouTube - Angry Giant Machine - Robot Commando, Le Car and Heinrich Mueller.
YouTube - Drexciya--Andreaen Sand Dunes
YouTube - Dopplereffekt - Satellites
YouTube - Drexciya - "Depressurization"
YouTube - Japanese Telecom - Mounting Yoko
YouTube - Glass Domain - Interlock
YouTube - der zyklus - shapeshifter
YouTube - Lab Rat XL - Lab Rat 3
YouTube - Japanese Telecom - Cigarette lighter
YouTube - Arpanet - NTT DoCoMo
YouTube - Dopplereffekt "Pornoactress"

very little is known about both Stinton and Mueller and much less about their production methods, and NO im not trying to copy them...I am just really fascinated about their production methods..so if anybody has any clues or ideas of what synths, effects etc thanx

speaking of the Drexciya sound, have you heard 'temporary secratary' by Paul McCartney? the track was made in 1980 so it predates anything done by Drexciya, yet it has some uncanny similarities - like the beat, twangy arpegiio synth and general crunchiness to the production. very unlike anything else macca has done.

Wow, amazing track never heard it before.

Less surprising than McCartney and maybe far fetched, but there's also a track by Logic System called Unit that somehow reminds me of Stinson / Donald's work: YouTube - Logic System - Unit And BamBam has a track on his King of the Underground album that's much in the older Drexciya style: YouTube - Bam Bam The Underworld

Anyway, Drexciya most certainly have created a very unique and distinctive style and sound, looking at how many try to create the same sound and atmosphere you might even argue they have created a genre on their own.

AFAIK there's some MKS80 akshon goin' on in Drex land, plus i'd guess the usual suspects drum machine wise, 606/808/909. Not sure what else they had but there's definitely a lot of Roland flavour, it is Detroit after all. I'd be interested in more info as well.

Abstract Thought was another great alias.

Drexciya is one of those things I'd want to keep secret from anyone that doesn't know about 'em, but then real electro has never been that popular anyway...

Here's an interview I found with James Stinson, recorded a few months before he died. Should hold some interest, he talks about the drexciyan philosophy a bit and generally drops wisdom. R.I.P.

look harder:

check out the track 'ritual' on this release

DOCTOR EVIL (BEN MILSTEIN), Ritual EP - Boomkat music download

lot's of good stuff on touch'n bass in recent years actually

TOUCHIN' BASS - Boomkat label catalogue

a few other small labels out there releasing quality electro too. some of it is even straight up analog sounding old school stuff like Ectomorph

the wee dj's have some killer stuff too.

electro is out there and still around a'plenty. there's lot's of really dark stuff that sort of breaks from the 'traditional' sounding 808 analog bassline type stuff but there's plenty of that stuff around too.

I love the vocal modulation on 'event horizon', presumably done to represent the warping of space-time?

I used to love that movement... I'm an Anthony Rother fan... but after a while, their tracks became "non-sophisticated" for me... coming from a pure electro background (Kraftwerk), I immediately recognized the value of these artists, but... I realized that they were producing music that was mostly for clubs...I hate this aspect. I almost hate some childish nonsense messages like the "I want to be a pornostar", "my beats", etc etc... the nonsense of the club world. At least, Rother had a higher musical profile before a decade, when he was producing real electro...now he does that awful techno style with his vocals... I really don't like it. I was also disappointed when I found out that some of this Detroit/Miami inspired "electro" was played in striptease shows...this is really a decadence.

mega fan of this whole movement, especially Dopplereffekt and their seminal first album Gesamtkunstwerk .. Japanese Telecom & Arpanet also have a few tracks in the same style (no surprise either). The later stuff moved into more experimental territory but the early stuff is just incredible futuristic ghetto tec. nobody really does it like them. i've always been curious as to what synths they've used and can't quite put my finger on it. it sounds like a mix of maybe commodore SID, FM and early digital. pads could be analog. drums are obviously 606/808/909. these dudes are mega incognito but if anyone has additional info/thoughts would be cool to hear..

Drex... real electro.

Japanese Telecom was good too; retro before retro got cool again.

Grava 4 sounds really modern/futuristic and can hang with anything out there today.

drexciya is one of my favorites, and I know they are a huge influence on a lot of people.

as for the sound, ha, tr-808 all over the place. and probably some mks-50 or mks-80 in there. And lots of live playing/live recording...

I don't know who did their 808 programming, but I'm guessing Stinson since's gerald's stuff solo usually sounds a lot different. In either case, some of the most masterful programming of the 808 I've ever heard, and probably one of the main reasons it's my favorite drum machine.
