Not sure, but maybe he's referring to using something extremely specific with regards to the sidechain effect that is so prevalent in dance music... Enter LFO Tool. Infinitely more precise and controllable than an SSL G Series compressor with regards to that sidechained kick drum sound. I'm literally just guessing, though.

I would imagine he is talking about equipment overkill or perhaps the thought of "if only I had xxxx in my studio I could get this sound I'm looking for and therefore a big hit record."

If so, good advice if you ask me.

Isnt this a stereo bus compressor? Meant to glue things together and not to shape a punchy sound. So i agree. It doesnt make sense to put this on (usually mono) drum sound.

As already mentioned its probably about equipment overkill and current advertisement strategies of software companies.

Or if it sounds good without it ... don't worry about what you don't have.

Some producers like fancy stuffs sort of status symbols like a huge wall of modular or expensive big name outboard gear.

Thats ok its their money.

Some may prefer to be all in the box & save money & maybe buy a house or fancy car thats ok too.

Bottom line do you FVCK what others think

Using a bus compressor on an individual channel (as opposed to the excellent SSL channel compressor) makes no [email protected] sense either.

The clue is in the name...

Is using an SSL G compressor on a dance kick a "thing" or something? Was there some context to that statement? Oh well, I won't ever need to worry about it because I sure won't ever be able to afford one. Thanks deadmau5!

guess he says that because compressors are mostly used to cut peaks and make louder sounds lower and vice versa. Whereas in dance music it's just a repetition of just one kick in the same velocity (well, in the majority of electronic music). Tone shaping is a different thing and I don't think he said it that way.

I've seen it used to "glue" drum kit stems together in other genres. Then running a second one on the 2 buss. He might have heard that then tried it in an EDM context and he's bewildered why anyone would do that.

You mis-quoted him. He said "...on a dance music Kick...".

he is right it is pointless...

not sure why he needed to say that I don't see everyone using a ssl type bus compressor on kick but anyway...

He's right- kick goes parallel with everyhing else. Kick stays untouched but everyhting else gets glue. Done.

the context seemed to be about not needing a roomful of expensive gear and that you could make great sounds/music with a basic computer setup.

(despite the fact the promo was shot in a room filled with expensive gear)

Is it worth $90 to watch the 20 lessons? That's a different question.

The reality is, it's not worth it... until it is.

Someone will make it their sound. Some new genre will live and breathe by it and then, boom, that's the sound.

Pointless.

Do YOUR thing until your thing is THE thing.

(Side note: Deadrodent doesn't have the best track record for being a straight shooter about gear and his techniques, so take it with a grain silo full of salt).

Just my (one man's) opinion.
