Analogue Mix Up

Hey . . . Anyone have an opinion on the better analogue mixing desk for a small project studio? 16-24 track, nothing too big but with matrix or outputs to accomodate 5.1 tracking and stereo, connecting to my daw.
Have tried allen n heath qu24, but found it drained the character resulting in a sterile tone. I've looked at used Trident vfm, Toft and Neve 8816.
Also read up on A+H analogues, Soundcraft but want to avoid Mackie, Behringer and Peavey.
Cheers PG
