There was an error opening the audio hardware.

I click and drap my mp3 file from one folder into the reaper main box and I get the following message

What happens if you do a different audio task, like recording a little snippet?

Are you using an external interface? Go to the preferences/device and make sure it's selected in the audio device dropdown. If you're using the computer's audio system same thing, go there and make sure it's set for "default system devices".

If the device is recognized and set you should be about to drop any audio format Reaper can use into any project, it will just convert it on the fly.

If you set the device to "default system devices", which is the audio hardware, and it returns that it's not a Reaper issue.
