Thanks! Since most of the preamps I've been looking at are out of stock everywhere, I'm likely to cool my jets on a purchase, but it's good to know the Grace m501 is a good option.
All of my sound engineer friends recommend the John Hardy preamps, so once I found out he is local to me I gave him a call; phone rings and the man himself answers!
After a long chat with him, he mentioned that he's working on a 500-series Twin Servo design, so since my new signal path doesn't really NEED a preamp (swapped the 416 with a new OC818) I'm inclined to wait for his to be released rather than go with a LOLA or Gold (I would pay extra for his 990, since he's been fabricating them for 40+ years). If Hairball made a combo of the Gold and LOLA (essentially, using the two Jensen transformers for I/O on the LOLA), it would be a different story
He also mentioned that he was sending an order of 990-C+ op-amps to Hairball, but has had issues with shipping and the recent snow here in Chicago, so once I test out the M-1 on my signal path (a buddy is going to rent me his in exchange for some good beer

) I will have a better idea of what I need and when.
