Air flow resistivity, absorption coefficients for isolation products in Germany

Terminology: Air Flow Resistivity (in German: strömungswiderstand) is given in kPa*s/m2.

– Air flow resistivity is the same as gas flow resistivity (GFR).
– Pa*s/m2 is the same as Rayls (5000 Rayls is 5000 Pa*s/m2 , or 5 kPa*s/m2).

I use the terms "air flow resistivity" and "kPa*s/m2" because this is the terminology used in the technical documentation I have read.

Note: In the measurement and publication standard EN 13162 it is required for the manufacturers to publish the lowest measurement of sound absorption and air flow resistivity:

4.3.11 Sound absorption
"[…] No result of ap and aw shall be lower than the declared level."

4.3.12 Air flow resistivity
"[…] The value of air flow resistivity shall be declared in levels with steps of 1 kPa·s/m3. No test result shall be lower than the declared value."

(Note: Air flow resistivity is declared in kPa·s/m2, not kPa·s/m3. This has to be a typing error in the standard.)

So, the manufactureres have several measurements of a product's air flow resistivity, and publish the lowest number. I've talked to both Isover and Rockwool tech support but no one seems to know how wide this range of measurements typically is.

The products are sorted according to their air flow resistivity value, lowest numbers first.

Note: The third and fourth decimal are arbitrary add-ons to insure readability of the table.

The ProRox series is very good. I was told this is a "European" product - meaning, it is not country-specific. It is interesting to note that it is made for the same duct/ventilation market as OC's 700 series. The noise in these environments are at least some times more bass heavy than usual, maybe the products are designed with this in mind. (I read in a report that dealt with noise issues in small water power plants that the dominating noise in ducts/ventilation is below 250hz, see page 31 in this (Norwegian) PDF: Støy i små vannkraftverk

Regarding sound absorption values in general: The European measurement procedures (ISO 354) produces sligthly less impressive data than the American equivalent (ASTM C423), probably in some part due to the dimension difference for the tested material. See these post:

Thanks a lot, man! Getting proper acoustic materials in Germany is really a joke. Most of the acoustically perfect European products are not "approved for sale in Germany".

I'll try to get some data from Ursa today, since they manufacture fiberglass only and are pretty cheap.

That's the problem in Germany: all materials are described so badly, you always have to call the manufacturer, and even then you won't get your desired information every time!
I think it has to do with the cost of "approved" data sheets – so they'll rather give the minimum working value for all applications in question...

i really doubt that a 34kg/m³ material can have 20kPa*s/m², as Andre already pointed out.

If that manufacturer specifies 5kPa*s/m² but on the phone says it has 20kPa*s/m², tell him "you're willing to buy from him material for less than/equal 20.000 € but you will actually pay only 5000 € - hell, numbers are not that important" ... i wonder what he's gonna say to you ... :-)

One of your brethern here Demetris has written a Calculator to predict the absorption of such panels. Online, no software needed. Very clear and easy to use. I would use some intermediate angle say 65 degrees.
Normal incidence will show the worst case scenario.

You may. In fact, everybody that wants to use the information I've gathered elsewhere, just go ahead and copy paste.

What I have understood talking to different insulation tech departments (Knauf in Germany in particular), is that the declared air flow resistivity must not be interpreted literally. The tech departments see no problem declaring a product measured at 6, 7 and 8 kPa*s/m² as a 5 kPa*s/m² product because then they are definitely on the safe side regarding advertised specs (higher air flow resistivity is considered a positive, they have a hard time understanding that really low flow resistivity can be interesting for someone).

There are also regulations that demand every insulation product sold in the EU to be 5 kPa*s/m² or higher. So in some cases, when lots of products in a catalogue get declared as equal to or greater than 5 kPa*s/m², I suspect this value functions not as a semi-accurate description of actual technical properties, but as an advertisment that their product is up to spec, complying with norms and regulations.
