Clap your hands in a bare stairwell. The pitched tone you hear is a resonance whose frequency is determined by the wall-to-wall spacing. That's modal ringing, except hand claps don't contain very low frequencies. So you hear only the harmonics. But the fundamental pitch is still set by the distance between the walls.

To expand on Ethan's explanation....

Modal ringing is a form of resonance. In general, with resonance, once there is energy at or near the resonant frequency, the room itself will tend to sympathetically vibrate at that same frequency. It's kinda hard to wrap your head around the whys of resonance, you just sort of have to accept that this is a property of physics.

Thanx ...one more question is modal ringing related to low frequencies only?

Yes and No. heh

Modes have "harmonics" that extend infinitely to higher frequencies. But once you get above 500 Hz or so the higher resonances become closer and closer together in frequency, so they don't stick out so much. And once you get above 1 or 2 KHz, typical furnishings like carpet and drapes can help to absorb them.
