Canadian Substitute for 2" Roxul Rockboard 60

Hi there, I've read quite a few posts around this question but can't seem to find a concise answer (I don't speak technical abbreviated language - just simple English LOL). I am making standard DIY acoustic sound-absorbing panels that will be 24" by 48" with a wood frame, breathable fabric, and mineral insulation.

I hear Rockwool safe and sound is not a great choice because it is not as dense, and the best thing you can use is 2" Roxul Rockboard 60 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d9WmjTJniI at 44:15). In Canada, we don't have this. So I have a lowes search result here: https://www.lowes.ca/search?query=ro...t=score%3Adesc

I just need a simple answer of what is the closest option in Canada to the Roxul Rockboard 60 product available to me.

When I search "roxul" on lowes website, here are the options that come up:

ROCKWOOL COMFORTBOARD 80 Insulated Sheathing
https://www.lowes.ca/product/foam-bo...eathing-118325
ROCKWOOL COMFORTBATT R-14*Mineral Wool Batt Insulation
https://www.lowes.ca/product/batt-in...x-47-in-305813
ROCKWOOL COMFORTBATT R-22 Mineral Wool Batt Insulation
https://www.lowes.ca/product/batt-in...x-47-in-305815
ROCKWOOL COMFORTBATT R-24 Mineral Wool Batt Insulation
https://www.lowes.ca/product/batt-in...x-47-in-142536
ROCKWOOL SAFE'n'SOUND
https://www.lowes.ca/product/batt-in...x-47-in-305817

What is the best option comparable to the 2" Roxul Rockboard 60

Thanks in advance!

I'll answer my question for those who were looking for an answer to the same question - my Canadian peers

I spoke with customer service at Rockwool (yes, I know Roxul is what they call Rockwool in the states). When I was doing my research and reading through forums and watching this lecture by Bobby Owsinski from Nimbus School of Recording (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d9WmjTJniI), I found the best option for doing sound absorbing panels was Roxul Rockboard 60 - a 6 pound board in a 2" thickness. It's acoustical performance details can be found here: https://cdn01.rockwool.com/siteasset...20180618125910 In Canada, this is an item you have to specially order in from a commercial rockboard distributor which Rockwool customer service can give you phone numbers for those that are in your area.

I also wanted to know what is a good substitute if you can't access the Rockboard 60, and the customer service person said that Rockwool Comfort Board 80 is the closest option. This is available everywhere in Canada, but in a 1.5" thickness, so you would need to double it up. You can view it's acoustical performance details here: https://cdn01.rockwool.com/siteasset...20181016101508

As you can see they are fairly similar in the 2" thickness category. So if you are Canadian try and find the Rockwool Comfortboard 80 in a 2" thickness, otherwise you will have to double it up as 1.5" is the standard thickness found in hardware stores. Otherwise you have to order it in specially.

You can call Rockwool customer service and ask for contact information for local commercial rockboard distributors in your area, then decide if you want to special order in the Rockboard 60 in the 2" thickness, or the Comfortboard 80 in the 2" thickness.

I called McMunn & Yates and ordered in 3 packages of the Comfortboard 80 as I have basstraps to build for the corners as well. They said the 2" thickness boards for the Rockboard 60 was $60 CAD and only 3 pieces came in a package. With the Comfortboard 80, 5 pieces come in a package and it was $78.

So hopefully this helps anyone else wondering how to get their hands on the Rockboard 60 here in Canada, or a substitute product in the Comfortboard 80.

Cheers!

Rockboard 40 and 60 are stock items at industrial suppliers. Why are you making such big deal out of making a phone call?

Whithout knowing the the thickness of your bass traps 60 and 80 Rockwool is probably too dense.

The industry standard is 4" Rockboard 40.

Roxul is obsolete. Rockwool is the name now in North America.
