Mackie MCU & Pro Tools

Just got my MCU.It's old version.

Can't make it work with PT.Getting "Pro Tools is unable to communicate with HUI" error.

-MCU in HUI mode
-I set everything (Peripherals etc...)

What is wrong?

Thanks.

Hard to say what's wrong. Have you made sure your cables are good? Do you know the USB port of your computer is working? Do you know the USB and/or MIDI ports of the MCU are working? Have you powered the computer completely down and restarted?

I have a HUI, not an MCU, and once in a while it loses connection and powering down the computer is the only fix.

Hi,

Thanks for reply.

Yes,unit is working.I got it from my friend. He was using with Logic.

Also i'm using midi to usb cable. It's new cable and working.Tried with other units.

Now i will try restarting.

Also i'm on El Capitan and Pro Tools 12.8.

EDIT:Restarting not helped.

If it's using the old firmware 1.xx it won't work. There used to be a ROM upgrade to 2.1 that would make it work with PT. Required replacing the ROM chip.
Not sure if that's still available. Contact Mackie.

You would change the ROM if you had the older firmware, you have the correct firmware. Just trying to help...
If I recall you need both midi in and midi out

I fixed communication error. But now i can control only PANs.Nothing on screen and not working other function.

I searched and found some threads about my error.MIDI2USB cables not working properly with old units. They say that use MIDI-MIDI cable and connect to soundcard directly.I'll buy midi cable and will se what's happening.

Yes you can use the DIGI003 midi ports.

I haven't been on Protools since 8 on a DIGI002 Rack. If I remember correctly the HUI device had to be downloaded but that may not be the case now. IF its in the peripherals dialog box you just need to select it I would think for BOTH MIDI IN and MIDI OUT going to and from your MCU. MCU HAS to be in HUI mode as well
I used a Roland 2480 under HUI way back when
Protools/VS 2480 Control Surface and Functions - VS-Planet Forums

The driver is listed in the link but who knows, Sorry I can't help more

Thanks for answer.

I tried this driver but no luck.I will wait new midi2midi cables.

I believe it's about MIDI2USB cable. It's not broken but it's not solution for old units,i believe.

Every one says use MIDI2MIDI cable.

Actually i can see something wrong with MIDI2USB cable.

For example it's always sending and recieving signals even without controlling MCU or PT.Cable's LEDs always flashing.I guess it's not normal.

By the way i'm trying to start MCU as Mackie Control or Logic mode but it's freezing. What causes it?

Your freezing issue is more than likely that cable and its midi driver NOT working with protools

Also i'm using midi to usb cable." Thats your issue. Use regular MIDI cables connected to the DIGI 003. Make SURE your Mackie is in HUI mode, Protools ONLY works with HUI ad NOT MCU

When you see data streaming all the time thats normal BTW. (Active Sensing)

1. Use the ports on the DIGI for midi in and out

2. If not, grab a little 2 in 2 out midi box and use it

3. DONT use a USB to MIDI cable

* I used HUI with a Roland VS2480 and a StudioLogic Controller with no problems

Thanks.

I just ordered midi cable. Can't find in my town. Now waiting for it...

About freezing,i don't think it's about midi driver or PT.

I'm powering MCU without connecting midi cable.(Only PSU)Trying to select Mackie Control to try with Reaper and trying to select Logic mode to try with Logic but when i select any mode instead of HUI,it's freezing.Only i can see mode name on screen.Nothing happening. When i reboot,it's choose Mackie Control automatically but still freezing while startup.

Make sure you have MIDI cables going BOTH directions

If its freezing you may want to update or re install the FIRMWARE

I have a Mackie HUI and always use midi i/o cables. Midi to USB converters can be problematic with the amount of data a HUI controller puts out.

Now tried with midi cables.Everything working great with other DAWs but Pro Tools...

MCU sending midi data to Pro Tools,it's controlling Pro Tools but Pro Tools not sending midi data to MCU.I can't see any signal on MIDI OUT light of DIGI003.So Pro Tools gives communication error.

How to fix this?

Yo have midi out port on DIGI003 set to go to the Mackie? Must have both directions going to work

You have a Protools setup issue at this point bro. Check your peripherals dialog
Also, check your Audio Midi Setup to see if things are good there as well AMS

1. In Protools you can ONLY use the HUI mode

2. MCU overlays for Reaper/Logic etc should be inside the DAW already

3. In Reaper its in Preferences/ Control/OSC/Web Click ADD and its under the Control Surface Mode drop down window

4. In Logic you go to: LogicProX/Control Surface/Setup/New/Scan All/Select MCU/Add

5. In Cubase you go to: Devices/Device Setup + to ADD the select it

6. In StudioONe you go to: Start Page/Configure External Devices/Add/Mackie Folder/then select Control for MCU

Can u tell me if the Mackie Control Universal will work OK with Cakewalk by Bandlab? I heard there are some issues getting surfaces recognised by ACT on CbB. I got chance for MACKIE Control Universal, but I'm wary about its ability to work on CbB. Any help anyone?
