She's a killer queen: Bohemian Rhapsody*is the second highest-grossing music bio

It took roughly eight years to come to fruition, but Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody*hasn’t stopped rocking the box office since it hit theaters on November 2. It took Dumbledore and the goddamned Grinch to best it this weekend, though the film, currently in its third week, still came out ahead of new, buzzy flicks like Steve McQueen’s Widows and the soul-warming Instant Family by raking in $15 million. That brings its estimated domestic box office to nearly $128 million, according to Box Office Mojo, which also reveals that, when factoring in its international pull, the film has earned roughly $384 million worldwide. And it’s only going up.

Fyre Festival founder sentenced to 6 years in prison

And to think: Just a few years ago, none of us had ever even heard of low-rent supervillain Billy McFarland, the guy who managed to trap a bunch of sense-light, disposable-income-heavy music fans on an island like it was his own, personal, Blink-182-adjacent Hunger Games. We’re talking, of course, about Fyre Festival, now the gold standard in unlawfully separating music festival fans from all their precious gold. McFarland—whose just-convicted crimes include wire fraud, bank fraud, lying to investigators, and, unofficially, besmirching the good name of Ja Rule—was sentenced to six years in jail today, partly for his role in the planning (or, as we’re now legally obligated to label it, “scheming”) of the festival, as well as a number of other business ventures of equally dubious character.

Suggesting that not even “the people”*give an actual **** about what the people want anymore, last night’s American Music Awards ended up being the least-watched outing in the popular-vote-based event’s history. About a month ago, the Senate passed the Music Modernization Act, a piece of legislation meant to update the way royalties work for musicians and songwriters, and Donald Trump signed it into law today alongside the biggest/only music superstars he could rope in, including Mike Love, Craig Morgan, John Rich, Doobie Brothers guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, and future White House chief of staff Robert “Kid Rock” Ritchie. Of course, Trump is Trump, so he could’ve had John Lennon on hand and we still wouldn’t be impressed, so let’s just talk about what the Music Modernization Act actually does.

You have already read the headline. I know that you do not want to hear this, and probably do not care, but I swear, it is appreciably and quantifiably better than any other streaming service. I say this as someone who was a fairly happy Spotify user for many years before finally switching to Apple Music earlier this year under some delusion that it might stream from my Apple TV better. I was wrong, and Apple TV is the worst thing on earth—finicky, slow, poorly organized, requiring five or six more steps than ever makes sense. It should be erased from the face of the earth. Do not even consider Apple Music.
