Melodyne 4 with ARA 2 Logic support

Here for the gear
It's kind of crazy how unreliable the new ARA Melodyne is with the latest version of Logic. So many times when I open an instance of it, the notes will fail to automatically populate like they're supposed to. I usually end up having to restart logic to get notes to show. I've also lost a good amount of work due to instability issues.

Pretty much my experience with it as well.

Same problems here I’ll be working on a big session and go back to earlier edits and find they’ve completely reset. They need to at least let you lock edits or regions. You have to really bounce any edits out ASAP.

I've lost edits as well. It really isn't ready for commercial work. I recently read that the "revert to saved" command will bring back your Melodyne edits; I'll have to try that next time.

I've tried this method with no luck. Some people have suggested that sessions created before a certain build of Logic will have these issues, but I haven't been able to reliably create a new session that didn't have problems. I'm still using the non-ARA version just to be safe.

I lost 70 hours of pitch correction work in February using Melodyne ARA with Logic 10.4.4.
I have to do it all over again for free this time. It really sucks that Celemony would allow this and not at least warn serious users. Just a simple, "Hey, Logic users, please don't use ARA just yet while we sort out how ARA works with current Apple OS." That would have been fine. I would remain a customer for another several years. Not now. I am looking for a different pitch editing program for keeps. ANGRY.
I tried the "just remember to press play first" bullsh&t. Not working, and Not professional.
Now I am using the older Melodyne (NO ARA) plugin. Yes, you have to transfer the audio in first. That sucks. whatever. I go get a cup of coffee while all of the tracks transfer in one pass.

To be honest, I'm tired of Apple not saying what the problem is and when, if ever, they will fix it. I'm not sure if the problem is a legacy one (something to do with the transport function of Logic at lower levels) or something which can be fixed from Celemony, and they do say it is something to do with Logic. So I've given up waiting for improvements in this regard.

My process is now
- use the ARA version of Melodyne
- bounce in place when done.

I'm happy with this process at the moment and it doesn't add the painful transfer time into the shenanigans. Also, it means if I _do_ happen to leave an ARA track un-bounced, all the resources are contained within the project, not in the Library location of the standard plugin edition (which caught me out countless times before ARA)

So, yeah, I mean, we can all complain about the tool - but there are also ways to work around it's current shortcomings. Do that, and you'll be a less frustrated user!

Personally, ARA or standard plugin or Autotune or whatever tuning treatment, I bounce-in-place as soon as I’m happy with the tuning. I want it out the way set in stone and the plugin out of the session, to save on CPU. It isn’t like a mix feature you would go back and tweak, unless it’s more for the vibe of course.

Ps.....no offence intended and I feel for your frustration and wasted time.

Pps...... I like the idea above of saving the Melodyne files in the project folder.

...well, FWIW, here's what has been working for me for several months now without loss...so a Disclaimer: Everything that follows is trial-and-error-anecdotal-evidence. I have no working knowledge of any of the internal operations of either program's code...just a desperate need to get on with my work...

1/ upon project open, run "play," exactly as Celemony advises, to reload the Melodyne information, do this every time without fail, don't ever forget this step......
2/ immediately run "save," just in case
3/ place Melodyne.ARA on the track and edit away...enjoy the moment
4/ then "freeze" the track
5/ then "lock" the track
........these two seem to be the magic key.....
6/ run "save" before every project "close," saving from inside the "close" option as it's doubts

...the "freeze" option has the added advantage of reducing the track to simple audio playback saving any cpu overhead. If there are changes needed later I "unlock" and "unfreeze" and am back to where I was with all of the Melodyne edits in place. Then run steps 4/5/6 without fail!...or...I don't know how or why this sequence works, I'm just grateful it does...hth.../s~

Thanks, SteveGS! I will try this exact process. Please report back here with any glitches folks, I’m going in deep on this. This is obviously better than bouncing in place and just letting the Melodyne edits disappear.

...please let me (and anyone else that's interested) know how it goes. For me? Still so far so good. I sent an email to Meldyne support as well...Cheers!.../s~

New Logic 10.4.5 release notes:
  • Logic now handles ARA files correctly in cases where a project and audio files have been duplicated.
  • Edited notes in the Melodyne ARA plug-in now reliably remain at their correct display positions when playing back after performing Save As on the project.
  • Regions on tracks containing an instance of Melodyne ARA plug-in now reliably play at their correct positions in projects that start earlier than 1 1 1 1.
  • Melodyne ARA edits are now reliably maintained when a project is saved and then closed immediately after editing in the Melodyne window.
  • ARA edits are now reliably saved in projects with multiple Project Alternatives.
  • ARA edits are now reliably saved in projects created from project templates.
  • ARA edits are now reliably maintained when Save As is used.
  • Exporting an Alternative as a project now works correctly in projects that contain ARA edits.

Hooray!!!
Can anyone confirm that Ara/Melodyne now work as per these notes?

I’m right in the middle of a huge project using Melodyne.

Question:is it safe to download the new Logic version, then open my 1/2 recorded project and carry on? Any special considerations?

I should think I would want to, because as I see on the new version thread, there are now issues with the Freeze track function. And that is the only workaround I’ve seen to maintain Melodyne edits after closing a project.

So forward is probably the only path to take?

...personally?...I would sit tight for awhile. You can always do the upgrade a bit later. I've just created a new, physically fresh ssd install of HS on a trail drive. Later today I will install the newest version of LPX and Melodyne and test drive on a copy of a current composition...we'll see ...hth.../s~

I've only used it in a limited fashion since release but I have to say I didn't experience any of the previous issues I've had with duplicate things (tracks, regions..) crashing Logic and losing edits.. but of course, it's your own risk to take. If you're in the middle of a huge project and you've got your processes in place to protect your work (bounce-in-place or whatever) I'd probably stick with that until it's finished.

I decided to go for the upgrade, although I’m still in the middle of my huge project.

One of the things I need to do is run a draft of some Melodyne treatments on a collaborator’s vocal. If she finds something too processed I can pull back on it. But before they corrected this problem in Logic I’d have needed to finalize my vocal edits, then if she wanted changes, start anew. So far so good, edits are being saved, woot!

I’ve found one case where Melodyne ARA still loses all edits. If I bounce my work to a new audio file, and then power-off and hide the track with the Melodyne plugin, it loses all editing data when I open the project again and turn the Melodyne track back on to say, make a tweak. If I just keep the Melodyne track powered on, then it does work as expected.

Apart from the track power-off, that is exactly my process. I recently considered using the track-off-and-hide to save a touch more cpu but I guess I'll not be doing that now. thanks for the headsup.

Please post your reproducable error and process here https://www.apple.com/feedback/logic-pro.html

Hooray! I finished a draft of my mega-project in Logic 10.4.5, and I think I only lost Melodyne edits once. That was because Logic froze (which it does on me every couple of days, spinning beach ball, a force quit and restart fixes it) and I may not have hit save before that one.

Not too bad, considering that I used Melodyne a LOT on about 20 tracks.

So in the end I'm very glad I took the risk and ignored the probably wise advice offered here (thank you!)

I've said before: I migrated to Logic/Apple in 2013 from Ableton/Windows because I wanted a solid DAW with solid pitch correction. Flex-Pitch worked for a time, until it didn't. Melodyne is the best! And now to figure out my my old 2013 Macbook Pro keeps freezing with Logic...

I seem to keep running into the same glitch.

Most of the time when I apply the Melodyne ARA plug-in, and I open it, it only shows the first 8 or 16 bars of the track (which are empty in my project), and doesn't open any of the data into Melodyne, which occurs in the later bars, it's just like an empty Melodyne screen of bars 1-16. Other times, it works, I hit play, it loads all 132 bars, the data for the selected track loads, all is well.

Any suggestions?

Oh, crap. I seem to have lost ALL my Melodyne edits. Dozens of hours! I didn't "hide" any tracks like the person posting above did. Carefully saved the project. I may have to restore to an earlier version to see if they are there. CRAP! I've done more work before noticing too.

...ouch!...sorry to hear that, for several reasons...OTOH, having had to redo/redo/redo/etc. edits on the same tracks certainly improved my talents and speed using melodyne! For me, my "fix" listed above seems to be holding under 1045, and other than a raft of screen display/redraws, all seems to be working "ok."...hth.../s~

Well thanks, Steve. I just had a crash, and since the track was frozen and locked as per your process outline above, it retained the Melodyne edits. Whew!

I still am having this issue (I mentioned it above) with a new Melodyne plug-in enabled on a track not bringing over the data into Melodyne, the Melodyne window opens but only showing the first empty 19 bars and nothing beyond that. Other times the whole track loads fine, I still don't know why. Any ideas? Anyone?

...try extending the audio region back to "0.0.0.0" with silence, and see if melodyne pickups on that. SOP for me is to lock all tracks to smpte right after import or recording, and prior to any edits, thus avoiding inadvertent timing shifts later. And if in doubt, I will do the "fill in thing" first. Yah, I know, there can be "side effects" doing that as well, but given the other "timing/PDC" issues, I can always check-back/confirm that I started "in a good place"...hth.../s~

Do you have any Flex active on those tracks? Melodyne Ara ignores any flexed Audio. Sometimes giving a warning sometimes not.

Melodyne ARA seems finally very functional with Logic 10.4.5/6.
I often see the beachball though for a few seconds - on my MBP 2017 at least.
Looks like Logic´s working hard to run stable with ARA now instead of loosing data all the time.

Anyone else have Melodyne finally saving edits in Logic? In a way that you can close and re-open a project without losing edits?
