Just received from Tanguy LEMAIRE Export Manager:

"... The new face plate is now scheduled for October 2019. ... "
(I read that as " not before end October ...")

So, really - just a facelift? And the 'Seven' in Roman numerals? Hmmm!!

Another AES come and gone - was Nagra even there?

Another Melbourne Cup coming up - no sign of VII coming round the bend. A late finish from last year - or a scratching?

I wonder what happened? I think I started this thread - but now I have lost interest.

Just returned from AES show. This is the first time in my memory that Nagra has not exhibited.

I don't know any specific details about the new Nagra Seven faceplate, but you can be in contact with Matthieu LaTour, head of Nagra pro audio at:

Yep, just about due for my regular three-monthly email follow-up with Matthieu... and no doubt the usual three-month-delay reply.

What Nagra SHOULD do with the Seven

Funny you should mention that, Plush. I agree of course. It is indeed more of a hi-fi item these days.

While they no longer exhibit at AES, they always have a very strong presence at hi-fi shows. I've attended a lot of shows this year talking about our new record and doing demos and the Nagra room is always a highlight. When I demo digital material, I normally carry the Nagra Seven with me with our sample files. When they see the name "Nagra", people are predisposed to think it will sound great, and of course it does.

If you ask me, the best thing Nagra could do with the Seven is to position it as a unique hi-fi product. It does sound excellent. The converters are outstanding. The headphone amp is one of the best I've ever heard. But getting music files onto it is an exercise in frustration and, at best, it's a pretty clunky process. They should do the following:

Upgrade the firmware to include:
  • A way to manage the import and organization of files into folders.
  • A simple, clean playback interface
  • A "DAC Mode", allowing it to be used as a USB DAC
  • A pop & scratch filter for doing needle drops

I would even pay for a hardware upgrade for my Seven, of that's what it took to upgrade the USB port to function in host mode.

It's just that the new one is listed at $5500, and the same one, without the new front and knobs, is $3000. The new Nagra Seven is for the high end hi-fi crowd.

When you contacted Matthieu LaTour in Switzerland, what did he say?

I have sent Mattheiu an email and hope to hear back a status report. I will let people know his response.

I received a very good email:

They are putting together their own machining shop for the front panel and that has created the delay. However, " It should be available in Q1 2020.
In the meantime, Nagra Seven are still available."

They also will let me know when the VII is available.

The response to me was rather quick.

Cheers!

In the Nagra Seven, does the line level input bypass the mic preamps?

If you can find a block diagram it should confirm. But most portable recorders pad line back down to mic and send through the mic amps.

Yes, that seems to hold true for most all of them, except the Tascam DR-680 which has separate line-in.

I was hoping the Nagra Seven would also be the exception.

Since there are only 2 xlr inputs, the line in signal goes through the input circuitry. But when "line" input is selected in "settings," some circuitry is turned off in the Nagra Seven. Extra gain is de-activated during this usage.

The line input sounds excellent and is full NAGRA fidelity. I use it that way all the time.

Does de-activating extra gain mean in effect that the signal is re-routed from going through the mic amp?

The answer is no because the input circuitry accommodates both mic and line inputs.

Do you mean to ask if the line input is merely a padded down mic input? (a so-called "head amp?")
I don't know the answer to that question.

Write to the Nagra factory and ask them.

So I didn't get around to it until this morning, but got an immediate reply to my email from Rene Laflamme at Nagra.

Question re Nagra Seven: "Could you please tell me if the line level input bypasses the mic preamps?"

Answer from Nagra: "yes it by pass mic pre."
