how can I use an external mono effect in a stereo signal?

Hello! I have a problem: I can't use my external effect in stereo signal. I would like panning the mono external effect (L and R) using external audio effect on ableton in a stero signal. Can it's possible?

I use a focusrite 6i6 (4 out, 4 in).

For now the connection is: focusrite 1 out----external effect in----external effect out----focusrite 1 in. Than, 3/4 focusrite out----mixer 5/6.

Should i have mono Y-Splitter - Split 1 Output Into 2 Inputs for connect mono external effect to 1/2 input focusrite?

Can someone help me, please?!

Because of your input arrangement I'm assuming the output of the external effect is stereo, correct? There is a reason to send a mono signal from the 6i6 to a mono input of the said external effect, correct?

A mono cable runs from the 6i6 output "1" to the effects box and from the stereo outputs of the same you go into inputs "1" and "2" of the 6i6 with either a stereo cable or 2 mono cables?

If so, what's not working? Is there a specific reason why you don't use inputs "1" and "2" in a single return track in stereo?

Where do you want to pan? On the effects box itself or in Live's return?

If this is indeed a single mono signal coming back —which is what "mono effect" otherwise would indicate — then you only need one input and you must pan it inside Live.

If you want to split the signal for further independently processing L and R, one idea is to make 2 audio tracks that take the effects return as their input with monitor set to "in" and hard pan these —making sure the sends of these tracks to the effects return are disabled! —then process these as you want.

Hi Mikael, thanks very much for the replied and sorry for my English!

The output of the external effect is mono, because I want to put a mono external effect in a stereo signal from my VST. So, I had use only 1 output and 1 input of the Focusrite. The external effect works and the signal is ok but my intent is split the mono effect in left and right of the stereo signal. For help me I have create from VST a sound with this shape:

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/mQ0RXI.jpg

But after a lot attempts, I had understand that VST instrument for receive the mono effect, it (vst) needs to exit from only ONE OUT of the Focusrite because the external effect has only one input (( so I tried to split the channel in Ableton… for example only left channel but I can only hear the left channel… or.. create two identical VST instruments -panning one on left and the other one on right- but this can’t works because both instruments go out from only ONE output of Focusrite and everything returns to a mono signal !!! )) AAAA!!!!

So, I think that is physical issue!! Ableton can’t do nothing, and PLEASE STOP ME IF I FAIL!!

If we can do something is necessary intervene between Sound card<--->Effect and Effect<--->Sound card, maybe using a mixer. In this way I can out from Focusrite with 2 outs (one Left signal and the other one Right signal).

Than put the 2 signals into two channels of the Mixer, in the way to panning Left channel 1 and Right channel 2. Than use fx send of the mixer ------> input mono effect, output mono effect------> 5/6 channel and panning Right

But I have only one mono cable, so I think that I have need of a Y Splitter Cable mono (for use 3/4 channel as Left).

For now I’m trying with only one cable!

however, the result is this:

left channel is dry and right channel is wet. It's ok!

But if i open fx of the channel one, some part of channel 1 go in channel 2 wet!!! I thought nothing should happen, because there aren't input on 3/4 channel.. but:

If your external effect is mono then all your panning before the effect are dead on arrival and will leave the unit panned to the middle. Unless it's a mono to stereo unit. Using an external mixer have nothing to do with this, unless you have some nifty way to turn the mono signal into stereo.

If a only mono unit, your options are to get a second effects box, with separate routings or to record the effect at least once to an audio track for one channel, possibly both, panned as you wish. This printing of effects is how these things have been handled since before the software days.

One other exploration you could try —maybe not so useful as it depends on the effect —and depending on the content of the two channels, the more different these are the better, is to experiment with mid/side encoding the signal, send that out to the effect in mono signal and decode this on incoming. Experiment with killing the mid and swapping channels. It should at least sound different, but it's not a replacement for two units of course. Also note that if your final production collapses to mono in playback it might cancel out some of the affected audio. Just test in mono on the master.
