Peaks between -12 and -6 should be fine, and depending on the instrument, the average may be around -18 or may be higher (distorted guitars, synths) or lower (drums, etc.). Just leave yourself at least 6dB of headroom (e.g., peaks at -6dBFS or lower) and you'll be fine.
