I'm no pro, do you hear what I hear?

My production skills are infantile but my ears hear what they hear. My son (16) band is recording with a low budget. This is a wip but near complete as I am told, my ears say; over compressed, what snare?, there is an acoustic guitar? flat , no space or little seperation. I'm I off base? What suggestions can I give without doing damage. You know how well 16 year olds take advice.

I'd start with the excessive sibilance on the vocals. Probably an artifact of over compression. It's something even a casual listener will pick up on and be annoyed by. All the other stuff their friends probably won't care about. Lifeless drums will still get them chicks :-)

Hey polar...

I would say (even though it's a pop/radio song) the vocals could come down a bit as well as the guitars. The drums sound all there and that may let them come through better. The bass may need a bit of eq'ing to get it to fill in as well (not really hearing it now?).... .. otherwise... cool tune!

Thanks for the input. Opening it up a little I think would help. I'll pass along the comments or throw it on the wall and see if sticks.

Same comments as the other posters here. Good tune & a solid performance ... which will present much better if you/they can reign these items in a bit!

I like the tune.
More bass tonal defintition would help.
The vox could be dropped back a notch.
Good singer.
I like the guitars and the melodies.

This song just need a bit of fine-tweaking.
A little auto-tune on a few lead vocal parts in the chorus will help.

Nice job.

It needs a few tweaks as listed above. I'd also have a more closely mic'ed sound on the hi-hat and have it more up front, expecially when the drummer is playing 16th notes behind the stacatto guitars. I think the hat's make it slightly more demo'ish sounding than the rest. I also think the singer/melody lines are a bit too floaty for the immediacy of that song is maybe asking for. Over all it's a good effort!

I reckon my favourite bit is the sound of some-ones cell phone getting ready to ring just as the song is fading out!
