Dont Be Shy... Rip this mix apart!

I would love to hear any feedback on this tune! I love deatiled explanations. All tracking and mixing were done in my little barn. Thanks for your time.

I think the kick could be a little tighter. It sounds slightly "floppy" for lack of a better term. A little too pillow-ish. Other than that, I think it sounds good.

Now and Than

I put on Creamware optimaster and a psychoacoustic processor I think the levels go a bit to high around the middle maybe it was the compression.I got rid of the fluffy drum problem.A really good song.

Too much sub-lows in the kick and bass..

Mix needs more clarity in the mid/high and high end… clearing up the low-end might help this. Kill two birds with one stone.

Snare is too small for this kind of tune.

Gtrs are too low… or have too much reverb (barnverb?) …

Hope this helps!

Hey You guys are awesome! You all extremely talented. This has been a very helpful experience. Now I gotta try and find the barnverb knob.

As for the sub lows

try a putting a high pass filter in the master fader.

Set it between 6-12 dB/octave around 40 Hz to get rid of that rumble

the tight thump in a kick drum is between 45 and 120 Hz even a little higher for the first harmonic of the principle freq

I like the sub bass in the kick, it's just fighting with other stuff, like the bass. Also, your "808 hit" is way too loud...might wanna bring that down 4-5db or so.

The kit overall needs some verb for sure, and the snare should be bigger like stated above.

The guitars are hollow sounding, should be tight and smooth sounding. The mix gets clouded during the b section of the chorus. Might wanna work on that.

Singer need some fx, like an eventide harmonizer or something.

Thanks for taking a listen everyone! I ended up cuting the low end on the kick, bass, and the 808 kick! I was off on all the low end. I had to listen to the mix on another system. The snare is a Chad Smith Pearl and its a thin sonding snare. The drums kinda remind me of 311 drums with that sanre. I also brought the guitars forward in the mix! Thanks everyone!

What would you do to get it sounding less hollow?

Well if you can re-record it, that would be nice. It sounds like the room your recorded it in has some acoustical issues. If not, well try high passing them at 120hz, and using an expander to cut out the room sound...should help.

I usually always hi pass my guitar tracks. Mabe its the room I should try to record them in another room and compare them. they were recorded in a small 10x15 room that is pretty dead. I guess i can try again to see if they sit right.
Thank you!

10x15 is the problem. Sounds like an acoustical nightmare to me :)

MIX

Hello Chris,
Vocals are very good, they don't start out strong enough but the singer picks up confidence as he goes into the song.
As far as the snare goes,I agree that it is a bit thin as well, but believe that re-tuning one of the heads down to fit the resonance of the key that the song is currently in would be a major improvement.
The reverb,is off because of the way that the tail sounds, but try the correct delay and that might solve it..60 (sec) x1000 =60000 divided by BPM =whole note value of your sync.divide this into quarter notes. 60000 divided by BPM divided by 4 = xxx MS delay.Try that
Pete.

I hear some nasty clipping at about 1:48, maybe bass guitar?

Reverb that snare out, and bring it up a bit. Could maybe use a little more compression...

It sounds to me just like the mix is a little too hot, like there's no room around anything, if that makes sense. I think in this type of track, you need some space, it needs room to breathe...

Try multing the whole mix out to a high pass filter set to about 10k, then compress that signal hard and blend it back into the mix...

I like the song - very nice. My first impression is that the drums seem to be in front of the singer. They sound like they are actually in a different space than everything else. I also thought they sounded a little too clean. Maybe a little bit of tape emulation and verb might help. Also, the lead vocal gets a little buried in some spots when everything else comes up in level - maybe bring it up to match or create some room for it. Also, it seemed a little bass heavy to me. Good luck and let us hear what you come up with.
