| Lives for gear | "Pop Hard Rock with an Edge" (heh heh) Mix Hey, guys! I'm hoping to get some feedback on a mix I've just started working on. Here's the details: A client of mine from the studio I usually work at called me to mix her band's record. She can't afford to book at the studio, so she's asked me to do it at home. I'm happy to oblige, but I have a sorta double-issue. I just moved into a new apartment, and have yet to do any mixing here...of course the acoustics are different, and the low end (of course) is translating most differently. I'm hoping for some of you guys to give me some feedback regarding spectral balance, as well as general mix stuff, so I can get a better grasp on my new room (I don't have much time to do the old "mix it, take it somewhere else, remix it, and repeat" thing...), as well as get some general feedback on the mix. The tracks were all well-recorded at Kissy Pig in Brighton, MA, which to my knowledge has a good Neve desk. The band did something like ten or eleven songs in one day (!!), so there are of course some issues, but I do have to commend the engineer on this one. Whoever you are, nice freakin' work! Anyway, the singer told me that on this tune they want a sort of big, "radio-friendly" sound, but want to avoid it sounding too "wussy". I guess Pop Hard Rock with an Edge. Heh...I interpretted this as "lotta low end, lotta compression, and pretty ambience". So that's sorta what I'm going for. I've played this mix on a couple of other consumer systems (namely, my roommates'). On one system, the low end (between 70-90Hz) was overbearing. On the other, the mix translated quite well. I'm a bit skeptical (OK...REAL skeptical) about the low end on this mix...lemme what know what y'all think, and what I can do to tidy it up. I'm also experimenting a little bit with 2-mix compression (something I have limited experience with), lemme know if you think it's working or not. One last thing: this is by NO MEANS the final mix...it's just at a stage where I felt it'd be appropriate to get some feedback from an educated third party. Thanks, you guys.
