Better Habits

Here's a song that I produced for an artist from Ohio (www.myspace.com/jasonquicksall). Mejon from Gearslutz played the drums in his studio. Jason and I played guitars at my place, and we also did the standup at Jons. How does the mix sound?

man, this thing has TV Commercial all over it.

Maybe a Zales Diamond commercial in Paris with a bunch of pigeons in the park, frolicking in your umbrellas....lol.

nice tune.

Cool, it's nice to hear such positive feedback. After the album is mastered, we'll probably shop it around and see if we can make a little $$$.

I'll post another son from that project to some more advice. Cheers.

The drums are all Jon. His room is set up with API pres and lots of nice mics on the drums. We used an Ifet7 and sm57 (room vs. beef) on the vocals and recorded the rest through the GTQ2 at my place.

do you guys think the bass is too loud?

its not loud at all. maybe the tremello guitar can be panned a tad to the left. just a little nudge. it almsot feels like its begging to be pushed a little bit left. but boy do i mean a LITTLE bit.

That's a very nice work, sounds really good in my studio. Quality tracking can really do alot! Who played the upright btw? Just for fun I've driven my mixer in it's saturation... your mix wins easily dimension, always a good sign

Hey Andreas,

One of Jon's friends, Brian Cram, played the standup. We did about 5 takes and I comped it from there. I also panned the 2 mics hard R/L to give the vocals space.

That sounds great, I really like the vocals a lot, they rock! Could you provide more specific information about how you recorded those vocals. The vocalist has a great voice. The mix sounds great as well. The only thing I would change after listening once on my laptop speakers is the solo. The guitar chords seem to compete with some of the lead guitar riffs imho. Keep up the great work though. Oh, also the drums sound cool and I like the playing, I can never get enough of brushes...

I ended up using 2 mics on a lot of the vocals: an Ifet7 (air) and an sm57 (meat). I Both were tracked through the GTQ2 and going through a rosetta converter that was modified by jim williams.

I mixed through the folcrom and GTQ2 and I blended the two vocal mics to taste. I think there might have been a bit of a hall verb or something too.

for pretty much all the vocals on the album, I had jason sing 5 or 6 passes. that was more than enough to comp a good take. good to hear you're enjoying the tune.
