It is all about the energy...

It is times like this I wonder why I bother dreaming about having an awesome recording space, and immaculate monitoring, and super fantastic gear...

This is a clip from a jam I had earlier today:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~rpurse/...%20cut%201.mp3

Now, it is a very simple setup. 4 mics + DI.

Drums - KM184 as OH, SM57 on snare, Beta52 on kick.
Guitar - SM57
Bass - Sansamp DI

Everything but the DI went through my Sebatron VMP-4000, then into an Apogee AD8000. The Bass went via a smakie pre then into the AD8000.

I tracked into Nuendo. Mixed using freeware plugs.

It is rough, live, and edgy, (and this particualr clip is angry... it was only like this for a very short time..) but, hot damn... I could relase an album sounding like this no worries. I've heard MUCH worse stuff being passed off as "studio quality" from local bands and the like... Blah. I'm better than lose lame-o "home studio" punks ! :P

Comments are most welcome. I've no idea how this mix would translate, and I wouldn't ever realistically mix an album without really thinking about what I was doing, but this is mostly for my own listening pleasure, and later analysis with the band, so real-world translation is not really important, although i'd like to know where i've gone wrong.

What do you think ? Burn me down please !

That song or whatever it is makes me want to stick needles in my eyes and a dull ice-pick through my scrotum.

Did you recod that on a Ghetto-blaster with a single Realistic brand (Radio Shack) mic?
You might as well have.

Is that "boring" enough for you?

Sorry, but you asked.

They're waking up !

The guitar was recorded though a POS "amp" of some kind, but I find its to be quite charming :D

Horses for courses, eh ?
