opinions - high end sound with low end gear??

here's a hip hop mix i just finished for a client. Only charged him $30/hr to record, and mixed for free (i grew up with his cousin, plus I'm giving out freebies while I finish my new recording/mixing setup and construction).
I mixed the vocals with the beat stem, which the beatmaker mixed.

I'm looking for opinions on overall quality here, while being on a budget.

How'd I do? I'd love to hear some opinions. How much should I be charging for the quality, editing, mix, etc....

All questions of outboard gear/plug-in/vocal chain, etc will be answered on request.

Thanks guys.

(oh and just for kicks...All material is Copyrighted)

Not bad.

I thought that most if hip-hop's best riffs and musical melodies are stolen from good songs.
Why is there need for copyright?
LOL!

Damn...I should have got a copyright on the word: Mutha Fugger!
I could have been rich!
LOL!

Just kidding!

For hip-hop that's a pretty cool mix, especially if you used low-end gear!
Kudos!

...

sounds a little thin to me...the e-horns were a little hot and cramped the vocals a bit at times. it needs warmth, but overall the mix is pretty decent.

mp3's are tough to judge unless youve heard the master first. im sure something was lost in the translation, so take all that with a grain of salt.

thanks guys.

i actually took off quite a bit of low and low mids from the lead vox. high-pass filter at about 100hz, since I was getting a bit of Proximity effect that I didn't dig too much.

then did a wide cut at 250 and some cut at 1.2k. added a bit of 10k shelf...and this is it.

the chain was mxl v69 (mullard NOS tube) ~~> fmr rnp ~~> ART VLA (stock tubes) ~~> Emu 1820m~~> Nuendo.

I'll try compressing the beat through the ART compressor and see if it fattens up the high end.

anything else?

I liked it!

Nice layering and 3D space.

Nice mix.

MP#3s are evil. They suck the bottom out of everything.

I thought the mix was fine. Nice work on the vocals, but some of the bottom end is missing, as already noted.

Only thing I didn't like was the cheesy, thin horns. Otherwise, thumbs up
