17 yr old F S/S Seeks Critique

I'm helping the young 17 yr old female singer/songwriter daughter of a friend of mine record her first album. All comments welcome.

Yeah, starts off good for an acoustic song. Hard to say where it goes though.

Nice Voice; good writing for 17 years old! Sounds good to me.
I really like how the backing vocals are done...how did you do that?

The backgrounds were done with classic double tracking and panning. Just layers. The sound and the harmonies are all Kendra.

Thanks for the comment!

I should have said "what did you use for effects"?
There seems to be a reverb or delay of some sort on the backing.
Did you offset the timing slightly?
Whatever you did it came out nice; kendra did a good job too.

Thanks again for the input. The artist was recorded with a 4050 into a little Bear pre and then to a dbx 266 and into delta1010/logic pro6. Just a little compression on the way in and no eq. A little more compression during mix with eq and de-ess. Backgrounds are doubled parts which she sung- in all 4 layers both right and left with just a little compression, eq and reverb. The guitar is an old Fender 12-string, also recorded like the vocals, but with a Rode NTK. Then applied classic ADT- copies right and left with delay. A touch more compression across the mix buss and that's it!

Kendra is pretty talented for a 17 yr old, especially around where we live, writing, singing and playing guitar.

By the way, did I mention she can also play the drums? Please comment on this:

Thanks again!

Thanks for posting the information about your setup.
No question about it, Kendra is a versatile, talented young lady.

I went to your website and see your from my neck of the woods (New Brunswick). I'm originally from Chatham (Miramichier). I have a niece down there who sings and plays in bars occasionally. Kendra and her would probably sound good jamming together if they didn't live so far apart.
I have a poorly recorded song of her singing (and playing guitar) "Me and Bobby McGee" live at a bar. Check it out if you get a chance.

p.s. I forgot to mention, after several listens now "Second Thought" has really taken hold. For a song with just guitar and vocals, that pretty much speaks for itself.

Nice vibe going on there, but there's some serious intonation issues? Esp. at the beginning of sentences, lead+backings really should be tighter together IMO.

Agreed. Good voice, no doubt, but needs to keep singing it until it's right.

No offense to the previous post and I'm not qualified to speak of intonation, but the slight offset of the backing vocals is what makes it sound unique to me.
As you know, music affects people in different ways.
I also like how the lead vocals are almost a conversation in the chorus while the backing are doing the singing.

Needs work on diction. She kinda mumbles and morphs her words.

Thanks again for the comments. I have suggested to her and to her mom/manager that they seek out a vocal coach, so she can make better use of what she has and will improve all that has been commented on here. As far as the backgrounds and harmony, I do suppose its a matter of taste- some who hear it say it rubs a bit and others love it. To my ear its good.

Thanks again.
