getting signed - question

I have a question. I've always wondered how musicians like Sigur Ros and Matmos, whose music isn't very accessible to most people, get signed to labels? Since the whole point of labels is to sell records and make money, how do they manage to get siged if their music isn't easy to sell?

I think those more experimental bands are for the people who are fed up with the standard polished rock sh*t and of course do the big labels also want to capitalize on them too (they may be now the minority, but i am sure that this will change someday soon).

A lot of the stories I've read about smaller indie acts (microphones, neutral milk hotel etc) happen where they have a friend who owns a small label or a studio with connections... remember a lot of indie albums are very low budget affairs, and there's pretty much no financial risk involved in pressing 500 LPs, especially if the artist pays part of it.
