| Help with guitar tones. Hey guys, I love the tone from this Beck track, but I have no idea where to begin to get the amp sound. I own a Godin electric that sounds beautiful, and I also own a PSA-1 sansamp rackmount thats great for super grunge tones, but it's not so good for this stuff. I also have a Marshall MGD100 that I was thinking of selling for a smaller amp that could get me morer of the tones I wanted. As far as I can tell the guitars sound double tracked with differnt amp tones.....beyond that I'm stumped. The song was produced by Jon Brion if that helps. Any and all ideas would be awsome. Owen |

| Sorry man, I've been avoiding those sounds my whole life. Thing is, it's used as an effect, who knows what it could be...could even be some cheesy midi guitar sound. |

| Lives for gear | It is a really distorted tone- sounds like an Octavia type circuit to me. If I was trying to cop this sound I would do the following. Strat on neck pickup into octavia or voodoo lab Proctavia into big muff or similar then into a class A tube amp (I have a 63 Bassman head) Then close mic it with a 57 into a nice tube mic pre. It sounds like there has been a bit of filtering/eq done post tracking too. You could try going direct with an octavia/proctavia and then using an amp sim if you are on a budget. You might want to check out some of Jeff Beck's playing- it sounds like that is what they are trying to cop. Check out the tones on Wired or Blow by Blow. It is all in the playing though. Hope this helps.

| the truth is, for that effected sound, the guitar is fairly inconsequential. get a fuzz box, plug it in direct, pan it hard to one side, delay that signal slightly and pan the delayed signal to the other side. equalize one side bright, and equalize the other side less bright. use a slide and clean the track between the lines played. this will get you sonically in the ballpark. chris rival middleville studio |
