| Nice work here. No idea on the summing process, but I have no objection to it. Truthfully I'd buy this as Mix System ITB without any doubt, and I don't mean that critically. The warmth, cleritty and feel are nice. Tell us about the musicianship and the technical process. The Jeff Buckley reference is clearly very strong here. Happy Thanksgiving, mixman499. John- |

| thanks john....happy thanksgiving to you as well.. i notice all the threads on itb v otb...summing, blah blah....i find it all humorous....to me, all that really matters ultimately is the MUSIC....that being said...i have some cool gear, i believe....and I certainly can hear the difference from a mackie mixer and an ssl....i thought it made an enormous difference....i think it is more subtle... i have an ssl 4056 that I usually mix on...sometimes I track to 2", but mostly PT...this track was all PT, and i thought i would try to see what i could get in the box.... the band is called "the strange" from Detroit, MI....really great musicians. the track was cut live with bass/drums/acoustic.....then vocals and some extra guitars overdubbed...the guys are fantastic musicians....protools was used only as a tape deck..no editing...no tuning...the Buckley influence shows on this tune...but they have shades of zeppelin, floyd, radiohead....etc.etc....cool stuff i believe.. drums were cut with a coles 4038 and an AT4047 in MS 5' in front of the kit. shure beta 56a on snare, audix d6 on kick, sm 81's on the toms.....1oktava ml52 10' from the kit for a room sound...preamps were a manley tube on coles and 4047....sytek on everything else....distressor on kick..... guitars were 57's and the coles...electric and acoustic....sytek pres....vocals were cut with a sm7, manley pre, manley elop comp....bass was Di through the bassists lr baggs di, into a neve 1272...then to a distressor on opto... the mix utilized my 2 distressors on the drum bus, a dbx 160 on the bass buss, and a manley elop over the output....i summed through 12ch of a mackie 1402....then through the elop back into pt....i also used a pcm91 verb, and an old sound workshop spring reverb....i used waves ren comps and mcdsp analog channel and eq's...oh, and a L1+ on a room mic... The mackie was used as follows....1/2 drums, 3 bass, 4 vox, 5/6guitars, 7/8 acoustic, 9/10 outputs of spring verb, 11/12 outputs of pcm91.....and no....mackie eq was not used...i am not that crazy..... i am now excited about trying out a real summing box, ie dangerous, the rolls folcrum or maybe an api.....if i could improve on what i did with this mix...more depth, etc...i can see me moving to the summing idea....the idea of true "total recall" is VERY appealing to me...no matter what...the recall on the ssl desk with lots of outboard is just never exactly the same... enough typing....turkey starting to set in....zzzzzzzzzz mixman499
