I did that mix a while ago, I couldn't find the project file. I doubt I did anything all that different. I usually compress the cymbal mics a bit with some Renn Comp. Guitars were probably just the Sonalksis eq. I really like the mix, I was going to mix it through the Neotek but the Folcrom/Trident/Super Stereo just sounds huge to me so it'll stay as is.

Wow......Steve both mixes sounded great! I was mostly impressed with the second mix. It sounded as though it was more glued together! Your engineering skills are superb dude! Can you tell me what effect(s) you were using on vocals in the DAW mix? Very subtle, but spread the vox nicely!

Thanks for the compliments Rick.

The vocal effects I usually use are 1 reverb, 1 delay, and 1 pitch shift. I try to make them quite subtle unless the part calls for something less subtle. With the reverb, depending on the song it could be a medium plate or even medium room if I want a more "live in the band's jam room" kinda sound.

For the pitch shift...did you use it at a very minimal setting to thinken up the vocals, or did you just use it on that one big pitch bend (only place where it was blatent to me)?

First off, there is another mix online, this one features the new RMS Super Stereo Compressor designed by Justin Ulysses Morse.. I can't believe how BIG this one sounds.. The RMS really is a SUPER compressor, it'll never leave my two buss again. so here is that mix:

http://www.blacklinerock.com/music/a...edomaster3.m4a

if you go in the high end forum, you can hear a comparison of the RMS vs another famous mixbuss comp, in wav format. I only have a few of these in stock and won't have any more until mid December so if you are interested, let me know asap.

As for vocals, I use the pitch shifter as the classic Eventide setting, 9 up on one side, 9 down on the other. Mix it in just as a thickener, if you can hear it, its too loud.

Bang,

Great work!

So you have no problems working on the Event's? I was thinking about getting a set for my project studio.

Also, curious to see what you thought about the Voxengo Marquis compressor. I think this is a major step-up in the world of software compressors. I have actuall been using more than my UAD's...but that could be that they are new.

Again, great work!

Hey man, haven't played enough with the Voxengo but so far so good. I like the Events, I got them for doing a friend a favor and they were definitely worth it. I like them equally as much as my old Truth Audio monitors.

I've got some Even Tr-8s, and I think they're great. Sometimes too great! You know how lotsa people say "if you can get a mix to sound good on NS-10s, you know it's a good mix?" Well, ANY mix on Events sounds like a good mix! The learning curve was pretty steep for me, but once you're used to them, they're very detailed and pristine.

As always with monitors, it's more about your familiarity with the sound of the monitors than their price tag. Still got some crappy Yamaha computer speakers I test every mix on. Toyota Camry stock stereo system is also a must for me.

The Voxengo Marquis is bomb, although I still use my UAD plugins a lot, as well as my hardware.

Once again, Bang, excellent mix job.

I always keep some of your mixes around as refs. It's nice to have some ballsy hard rock that doesen't have the SSL 4K midrange sound smeared all over it. It just proves what a talented engineer with some great musical smarts can do with a DAW, some plugins and a great but not obscenely expensive console. Anyway, now that my nose is brown (though what I said was entirely true!), I seem to remember you mentioning something about releasing a drum sample collection a few months back. Was that you or have I been smoking the crack? I can't seem to find any info on it. That could have the definite ability to rock.

Hey man thanks for the kind words. Having worked on both consoles quite a bit by now, I'd say that the Neotek is on par with the sound quality of the SSL 4ks. Now that I'll be adding few RMS compressors, I'll have some great dynamics to work with as well.

Now, the DRUM SAMPLE CD. I definitely have some of the greatest drum samples made and I do plan on releasing them, the disc will be called BIG STUDIO DRUM SAMPLES. It was supposed to be released in the summer, but the move to Los Angeles really screwed that up and my mix work (and trying to get the Blackline stuff done) has really gotten in the way. But it will be out soon and I already have a few people beta testing some samps. I'll let everyone know asap.
