Foo Fighters - ish type track hows it sound?

Done ITB Nuendo. Guitars were fender jazzmaster > vox ac30 + fulldrive distortion. Not much I could do about them not sounding modern but I think it has a cool vibe.

oh yeah, did RECORDERMAN overhead style on this guy really helped with the snare cutting through.

Nice...the guitars sound really thick-cool sound. Drums sound good too. The only thing that I heard that I would change would be the volume of the vocals. To me it sounds like they need to be louder, especially in the verses, but in the choruses a little bit as well. Everything else is so fricken huge (which i really dig) but I just think that all of the guitars/drums/bass beat up/bury the vocal a little bit. Other than that, I think its a pretty bitchen mix.

P.S. What studio was this recorded in?

Sounds great man! I agree about the vocal though...I want to hear it much more "in your face". Rock on.

I really like the instrument mix - my apologies if this is beating a dead horse - but the vocals need to be more present. From what I can hear of the vocals they could also stand to be beefed up a little - they sound a bit thin - may a bit of bottom end EQ boost - play around with it a little - maybe a bit of strategically used delayto thicken it up a bit.

I think this will be a really good overall mix once the you adress the vocals. The instrument mix is really good. This might a bit nitpicky but the stereo image was a bit too wide overall. I don't know specifically where but I think it might have been the drums. Whatever it is something could stand to be little more focused - not everything has to be panned so hard L/R.

You have the raw elements of a really good mix - keep tweaking.

recorded at my studio..... www.castleultimate.com
Vocalists voice is really challenging to get to sound right. I found it was either too thin and weak or too overcompressed sounding. Perhaps its because I dont have very good gear. Vocals were Rode NTK>DBX386 tube pre. Waves RVox and RDeEsser.

Thanks for the tips. Do you think that if I didnt have the guitars and drums panned so wide that it would be more interferance with the vocals?
Ive only been doing this for about 3 years so I will take any advice (including getting better gear hahah)

peace

Sounds great- really very cool track.
Yes vocals need to be a tad louder, other than that its cool.
Got any more?

sounds excellent!
Great band too...they kinda remind me of 80's Husker Du, Moving Targets...
I too would try and make the vocals more lively, give them more presence...
Have they released any other stuff?

Fukin great sound with not so great equipment. Was this mixed in the box entirely.. Doesnt sound like it. This sounds like it was mixed on an analog console and then mastered.. hats off..

Can you ..

1) tell us how it was mixed..?
2) how did you get it to sound that huge?
3) Was this mastered? The levels are way up there for a "rough mix"

Great seperation btw..

no samples for drums, drummer was also an engineer and knew the further he had his cymbals away from the snare/toms the better, also had an orange county kit with K custom cymbals.

I mastered it with T-Racks everything in the box.
Big drum sound was combo of a nice live room and hard hitting drummer who went easy on the cymbals.

Great mix/song. Don't touch the vocals! They're great. Or maybe a little bit louder in the beginning of the song. Really my cup of thee.

Ow yeah, and if you really want to make it sound like the foo fighters. Send it through an L2(or something else) and make it pump..

Like the song, like the arrangement, like the energy, like the semi-chaos, like the vocals and instruments. What's not to like?
Great bit of guitar rock with a catchy melody. Interesting ending.
Sounds fine on my soundsticks.
Love the guitars, very classic sounding.
Doesn't need any further tweaking!
Seems like you served it justice.
Great job

Let me know when the album is finished and I'll buy a copy.

I just listened to it again but this time on a full range hi-fi stereo and I agree with heyman. You're either an engineer wiz or just full of wiz.

I'd like more info on the recording, mixing and gear. It just doesn't add up to me?

If you really did do this with the average gear you have and in the box, my hat's off to you. Regardless, it's a really good production and I like the band.

OK HERE GOES!

I guess I will start with gear list....

Drums - Orange County Custom Maple Set (most of drums were plugged into presonus digimax which is transformerless preamp with built in variable limiters which i used on alot of the drums to get a "hotter" signal) (in general i do not like the sound of the preamp without the limiter at all)

kick inside - d112 > presonus digimax
kick outside - rode NT2 > digimax
snare - 57 > digimax
rack tom - 58 with the pop screen off > digimax
floor tom - 421 > digimax
overheads rode NT5s (recorderman style) > digimax
rooms - marshall mxl large caps > dbx 386 tube pre

The drummer knew how to play his kit in a very recording friendly way. Not to mention he had a nice ass kit with great cymbals for recording. "K Custom" crashes and "sweet ride" ride cymbal.

Mostly Waves RenEQ on drums.... Did parallel compression with a "compression" buss and mixed that with non compressed drums into a "drum buss"
Rooms and overheads mixed pretty high and since i did recorder man style, the drums cut through more than the cymbals so i used waves L1 lightly to bring up the cymbals in the overheads track which i guess made the snare/toms sound in the overheads sound even bigger.

Bass was 70s P-Bass with maple neck > Ampeg 40 watt 1x15 combo.
Miced with d112 and used T-Racks compressor (love that plugin) and some Waves EQ and some Waves RBass for a little sub enhancement. That was about it pretty easy with that one.

Guitars...
Fender Jazzmaster > Ac 30 head > marshall greenback 4x12 for rhythm.. add a fulltone fulldrive for more distortion on alot of parts.
Mixture of Rode NTK and 421 (mostly 421) > presonus
Rhythm powerchord tracks doubled but done on separate days with different mic placement and eq.
Amp cranked for maximum goodness. (gotta do it with a vox)

Vocals
Rode NTK > 386
RDe Esser RVox EQ and R Verb

T Racks MB Limiter for mastering.

Seriously... this track makes me want to revaluate all those ITB mixes I thought were hopeless cause I didnt have an SSL, distressors, and the whole deal. Whole mix sounded awesome (espcially the guiars). Could you post a link to the recorderman overhead style? Thanks alot, and again, great track

Ssshhhh, dont tell everybody! I love greenbacks and not the re-issues! I have 68' cab. I think you took the time to make sure the source was good of everything before miking it up! Keep it up!

Can I ask what you used for AD conversion into Nuendo? Still using PARIS here but been contiplating a move for about a year or so now and this mix was enough to get me thinking again.

Thanks,

its an overhead technique with the hihat side overhead mic directly over the snare about 2-2.5 drumsticks high and the ride cymbal side on over the drummers right shoulder aimed at the snare (rotate to get kick/snare as center as possible)
