| Fix my mix - indie rock sorta Someone help me figure out what to do with this. It seems everything I record sounds muddy. Probably with good reason. Recorded with Motu 8Pre, Akg Drum mics in Glynn Johns formation and guitar and vocals through Rode NT-1. Bass direct through ART Tube PAC. I'm in a untreated, unfinished basement which sucks but thats a whole other topic. It just seems I can never seem to get anything to sound like it has some sparkle on it. I know there are some crappy takes on it but I'm more concerned about getting stuff to sound right in general. Your criticism followed by your advice greatly welcomed! Lincoln |

| I kinda like the song how it sound now - maybe a little too much highend on the vocals and other stuff - sounds processed I think a darker mix could work here. Maybe clean up some midrange on the distorted guitar and the drums could have a little more of that midrange glue from the guitars. Try to distort em a little... Just have fun. Cool song!

| I feel the vocals and the guitar are fighting against each other. Vocals need more presence, I'd try different eq and compression settings. |

| For someone to really "fix my mix" they will need access to your individual WAV files. My opinion: Intro too loud (I immediately cranked the volume down... watch "loudness wars" video on YouTube). Take out 2 bars after the first vocal verse. Mix: Too much clipping. Give it some dynamics. Song should kick ass and come up to level after the 2 bar break after the first verse, not at the first note! The end needs fixing. Example attached. I wouldn't change EQ or compression on the vocal until you hear how it sits at different levels. It could come up a bit. If a song has vocals, they should be heard and understood... otherwise, it's an instrumental. |
