| Peep this track I mastered - Proceeds go to J Dilla's Mom!!! What up ya'll... (in all hopes that this is a worthy enough post to not get deleted being that it is about my mastering job, LOL) I just recently mastered Solillaquists of Sound new record "Death of the Muse" featuring Chali'2na (of Jurassic 5), J-Live, and Ms. Yancey (aka Ma'Dukes - Dilla's mom herself!). If any of you who followed Dilla's career probably know of all the troubles Ma'Dukes has been having with Dilla's estate. On top of the fact that she's battling her own health issues. I've been blessed to be apart of the process in the making of this song, from consulting on how to improve the mix, to mastering it myself. Solillaquists of Sound family to me... so please if you want to support 100% of the proceeds go to Ms. Yancey. For more info check the front page of Okayplayer.com or go to: okayplayer - Death Of The Muse: A Dilla Tribute and to just snatch it up directly: Solillaquists Of Sound ft/ Ma Dukes, J-Live, & Chali 2na (of Jurassic 5): Death Of The Muse (Download): Donation For those who have heard it already... let me know what you think of the mastering. For any questions about the mastering techniques used in this project please post it up. And anything about the production, mixing, and writing itself, I'm sure I can get Divinci of SOS (producer/MPCist) to post up as well. PEACE!!!

As far as mastering is concerned, I did it in Logic as well using different kinds of plugins from Tritone Digital, UAD, Waves, and even Logic plugins. Then running it through some high-end analogue compression and mic pres before limiting. I do that to soften some of the digital harshness that comes with the territory.... and because it adds to the record. It's not like tape per se... it's more as if the mix was running through a console of sorts.

| What converters, compression and pres did you use when you took the mix out of the box and back in? |

- The track was created in Logic pro, with some synths and a bunch of EXS24s triggered by Keys and MPCs. - We then tracked at my friend's studio using our Soundelux E49 mic going through a vintage Neve 1073--> UA 1176--> Cranesong Hedd 192 (clocked by my Big Ben) and then into his Pro Tools HD system. All but Chali's vox were recorded in this way. Again, he used a vintage Neumann M49 (the model that our mic emulates and was modeled after) going through an Avalon unit (not sure which). - From start to finish, the sessions were recorded @ 44.1kHz/24 bit. - The track was then mixed back at our home studio in Logic Pro 8, with our good friend, Beef Wellington, helping out with the vocal mixing and being a second set of ears along the way. I recently got a new Mac Pro and three UAD-1 cards with most all of the plugins. As I recall off the top of my head, we used a bunch of the Neve processors, the Helios69, the Fairchild, the waves deesser, and stock Logic plugs to finish the mix. I also recently got the Focal twin6be (a GOD SEND to say the least) and I run that through the presonus CS w/ remote being fed from the s/pdif out of my Mbox 2. Hope that helps.. Thanks and please do what you can to support Ms. Yancey and spread the word. | |
