Wavering tempo & clipping - but has a vibe. Where to bring it next?

It's one of those songs that I recorded the moment I wrote it. Whether or not it was to a click or whether there was going to be an overload didn't even enter my mind. So now I've messed around a little with it to a click track with a view to putting some proper shape on it but it just doesn't have the same vibe I got first time round. Not sure where to bring it now! Here is the rough but vibey version.

Any thoughts welcome!

I think the treatment you added to the loud peaks made the sound a little too processed and nasty for my taste. I like the take though. Is it possible to redo the song - kinda aim for the same feel/vibe. Good take, I understand that you want to save this one. I suspect it sound better if you just leave the loud peaks - don't try to fix it because it sound compressed and ugly.

Good singing to!

Keep it up - I'm pretty sure you can nail this one again. Go down to the pub and have a couple of beers and relaxe a little and try again.

Very nice. You have a great voice. You sound a bit like Ben Harper on this.

Thanks guys. The more I think of it the more I think I should stay faithful to the vibe that is already there. It's working. I just need to tighten the tempos movement and maybe add in some subtle instrumentation.

That idea about going to the pub before the vocals is a nice one. I like!

Why don't you use the track as a tempo template. In Logic you can analyze the transients and assign the beats to beats in the song then will automatically compute tempo changes. Then add a click or kick drum to play and on another track and it will follow the tempo changes. Then record more tracks on top of that. at the end, mute the original track. You can also smooth the tempo changes to some degree while keeping most of the original.
