how does this mix sound to you?

live off the floor in one room except for the scratch vocal which was put down right after tracking the tune. it became the keeper vocal (dang, 'cause i found a better mic for the singer after the other beds were finished)

how does it sound to you? be honest..

The mandolin is dope. The panning is a bit hard and there's a bit too beaucoup goo in the low mids, but.. it's nice.

The singer sounds a bit wooden, but the track sounds very intimate.

thanks for the feedback, i do appreciate it. the low mid thing might be in the verb.. i could take a look at that. the bass was a mustang bass, too. so not as defined as a p-bass, or jazz bass. turns out i did no eq above 500 when mastering it. it was a quick 5 tune demo session. FYI the mando mic was my EV666.

dim light, are you talking about the purple onion in vancouver? it's still around i think.

Relaxing

mmm, traditional, but, ahh, nice, and relaxing. Love the guitar solo, perfect. Go DJango.

Great snare sound, how did you record the stuff?

R2OS, thanks for the comments and i'd be happy to outline the setup.

the recording setup drummers left to right in the room was this:
mandolin - EV666
bass guitar, AT3035 mic on the 18" speaker and DI out from the head.
drums were mic'd with a vintage D12 on the batter side of the bass drum and a vintage tube sony stereo for OH about 24-30 inches above the snare - 2 cymbals, no toms. the snare has a natural skin head on it, which i think works very well for the brush tone. i am also the drummer.
electric guitar amp (a great old brown tolex fender with a 15) mic'd with a vintage altec 687B.
as well there were 2 octava MC012 omni's for room sound.

recorded through my 2408 mkII and 24i at 24/48
the guitar, bass, drum OH and room mics went into the DAW flat. in mixdown the drums and room remained without EQ. everything else had a small amount of EQ here or there.

the music, including solos, was all played live without headphones. leakage was very minimal. even the mandolin mic had hardly any drums in it. the vocals were added after, also without headphones, in the control room. this tune was the only one the guitar player sang, and he liked his scratch that we threw down right after doing the take, and later didn't want to redo it. i don't like the vocal sound as much as the sound we got with the SM7 the next day, but...

Nice! Any pics of your studio?

Do you do drums for others here at the forum?

well, i too am fairly new to the forum here. i'm also not quite sure what your question is.. i'm happy to drum for anyone who comes to my studio needing a drummer if my skills are up to it, but so far that hasn't included anyone from this forum, i don't think. is that what you meant? sorry for not getting it..

btw, any pics of my studio would be seriously underwhelming, LOL! although i have tracked many albums in other studios over the years, my own studio is in my home, in the mostly open unfinished basement. my control room is kind of nice though, with real cherry wood wall panelling and fir floors (it was like that when i moved in). i've made it into a pretty comfortable space and people always say they find it easy to be relaxed and feel at home. i think that helps make good music...

Sounds great, I envy you...

What I meant by my question on the drums was only if anyone here exchange material and work on each others music?
(I'm a newbie here as of today, he he)

well, i myself haven't yet participated in that kind of venture, but it seems the internet is ideal for things like that. i'd certainly do it if i liked the songs someone had. it would be an interesting experience i think.

and welcome to the forum, there's a huge wealth of information and experience here.
