| Mix for critique: shoot Hi all. Well, it has been a while since I posted something on Gearslutz, so I decided to let you all critique a mix I am currently working on. It's from a demo of a new local band. The song is not an original one; it's from a Polish group. So, I don't understand a word of what she's singing. Anyway, I would like you to focus on the sound of this mix. All recordings and mixing were done by myself. Recording was done in Soundscape using some decent mics (AKG C414, C451, Neumann U87...) and some outboard mic pre-amps (Phoenix, TLA, Focusrite). Mixing is done ITB in Logic, using 3rd party plug-ins (e.g. Kjaerhus). Many thanks. B ![]() |

| Hey Bert, How's life? 2 (negative) things jump out at me: There are some esses that are a bit annoying..it's not as bad as before but i stiff think they could be tamed........especially in the intro......with this sort of d-essing, you'll need to tweak the plug differently on each ess to get the best result.....sorry! The kick....it's got quite a lot of sub-bass energy...a sort of subby "plof" sound...on my system it's really clear and i think it would be a problem on any bass heavy system. For me the mix could be a bit warmer.....some tubes, tape compression or even some digi emulation might do it...but you would have to watch it doesn't bring out those esses even more. I also have a the feeling it's a bit "hard" in the mid frequencies.....you've got quite a lot of instruments in the same range...the girls, the violins, the flute, these are leading to a build of possibly harsh frequencies in the 1k to 4k range....maybe you should take a look at this area. Cheers!...........D

| Hey Darius, Life's a little hectic nowadays. Lot's of good stuff going on, lot's of major changes coming up... Exciting times... Anyway, thanks for your comments. I agree on the esses... I know this is a weak point in the recording, but I didn't do anything about this yet. After all, this was only my first rough mix. But I am working on it. I tried to fix the bass-drum thing... I didn't notice this before, but you're right. I probably didn't notice this before because of my new (too) small room... I'm still learning the sound of this room... If I find some time, I will post a new and improved version... Cheers, B-) |
