Drumsound's Band!

Hey Everyone,

I usually don't come here to MP3 land. I usually know where mix will be by the time I have vocals on a tune. This one is different because it's my own band Wiplot. They're kind of driving my nuts because they think they all want "______" and they think that's the same thing.

Anywho, after finishing the last few overdubs tonight I started into this tune. We have a good friend that comes and helps whenever possible. He and I will finish this Wednesday night.

What I'm posting is faders set, no rides, basic "rough-in" EQ and panning. No FX, no automation. There's on guitar I was muting. There's a drum parallel and a 2-mix comp.

Make any comments you want. I'm just looking for a little perspective.

Thanks a lot.

I could definately hear a really compressed OH style roomy lo-fi sound for the drums when you get the sounds together a little more. That snare is crazy sounding. It sounds like one of those 70's 10 inch deep snares with top head and guts loose.

Some synth effects along the way would be cool. The song gets bogged down a bit motion wise with the bass playing a continuous part, and the guitars playing a fairly continous part. Whats going to keep the attention. I'd say vocals, but I can hardly understand a word. Just some things to think about.

Its a different kind of song. Sounds like a movie sound track type of song to me. I'd like to hear it with some more things sorted out. You have some very cool sounds going for sure. Great bass sound!

I may try to trigger some weird thing out of the Mangler. The drums in the verses are recorded with the tape sped up. When the machine is put to regular speed they sound all "Tchad Blake-y."

MMMM the vocal...Dean is an odd singer, with an odd almost lisp, but not really. I think I'm gonna double compress the voice and sneake some FX under it.

A big part of the bass sound is the bassist. I'm using about 75% direct and 25% mic.

I agree.
I have a feeling I know where your going with this. I know this is not the final mix so I won't go into a ton of things, but I wouldn't mind hearing a bit more top end on the whole mix ( agian, I know your not done yet)

I totaly think your on the right track though. I know that with my own band I usually have NO perspective by the time I mix. It's totally a love/hate thing.

Brighter, got it.

Right track, good thanks.

I can record, produce and mix other people's music till the cows come home. I do my own band (and I'm not even the songwriter) and I feel like a boob. I've heard the songs so many time, both right and wrong, until I don't know which end is up.

Thanks both of you for listening.

Hey man I agree. . . about the mixing your own band thing. You can tell another person why you made the mix decisions you did and normally they'll take it ok because you are a nuetral 3rd party. Tell your guitarist that you cut a part or turned it down and he'll be like "Well hey man its my band too. . .so go **** yourself" and then other excuses. My band knows that I mix for other bands and always do a pretty good job. Yet we start tracking in less than a month for our second album, and I know that there will be drama.

I don't tell people how to play their parts, or try to make my part more dominant, yet they feel the need to tell me how to mix. Its a constant struggle. Do your best and try to stay friends and thats all you can do.

Oh yeah and show your band this thread so that maybe they will keep their mouths shut this time.

Listening in mono ...

I hear this as almost a psychadellic tune with heavily somp'd drums, heavy effects overall, especially the vocal.

And some keys or second guitars in the chorus, maybe some ooooohhhhhh's.

I'm outa tracks!

I could find a few, but tracking is over!

Here's version one. There may be a few little updates tomorrow.

Brian,

The mix is mostly mono. It got more mono tonight...

I love the overall sound/feel you accomplished.

I can't help but comment on structure though. Since this is your band I would consider these things...

Drums should go in on :19

When you go into the verse of 2:30 something needs to answer the main vocal melody, kind of like what you have on 1:11.. but I was thinking more of a type of "beach boys" kind of chorusy psyco answer.

Second chorus should come in on 2:53 I think having a verse again there is overkill. Just some thoughts.

Jose,

Those are cool "radio edit" type things. I may try them out. I'm not sure how the singer/song-writer would react to cutting a verse though.

The BV, well we're done tracking and this has lingered long enough...

Thanks for taking a listen.

I've got another update to add.

Here's what I'm calling the final version. The delay is bigger, the Ring Mod on the WOOOOO is bigger, and the guitar is a little bity-er. I put a little panning (manually) on the BV.

AND, I had some time and got the 1/4" caled correctly. I just got the cards re-capped and my first set-up I did late at night and screwed the bias. I've got it sounding really nice now.

No problem man, just tell him this crazy Bolivian dude thinks you should cut some parts : )

Anyways, I really like the song and style. Let me know if it will be available for purchase somewhere. Good Luck!!
