I'd love a critique on this old piece..

Hey everyone, I have got to tell you: This whole forum is really great! I'm glad I found it in my travels! When I was last actively recording clients back in 1997 I wish this was around for so many reasons! Back then, I was really small time, but I got a lot of work through word of mouth. Its amazing how much the gear has changed! I am now slowly getting back into it as a business and with that, buying new gear and doing it from the ground up the right way for a change.

This recording is really nothing to brag about. I dug it up from an old DAT from back then. I guess I just never have had people who actually know what they are doing critique my mixes and recordings before and I think for that of many reasons, this is a great forum! Listening now to the recording, I can hear a ton of things I would have done differently or re-edited. Some of it was limited to my equipment at the time and my guess is the rest was mixing fatigue and inexperience.

This song (and Album) was recorded on :

Tascam TSR-8 1/2" 8-Track, Mackie SR24. All overdubs were on an API 512c and AKG c414BULS. I mixed it all down to a Sony 60ES DAT and sent it off to be mastered. I converted (or attempted to convert) this to MP3. It may be lower on levels or what not. Yes, this song is about Amelia Earhart.

Anyways, thank you in advance for listening!

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, it's a long song. Sonically, I know my heads were starting to wear, but I did my best with what I had. I used sm 81's for overheads. They seemed to blend fairly well, but it's funny how a standard 57 can sometimes sound better for overheads. I would have mixed the low end differently at this point, but I remember the singer songwriter at the time was looking for a sound and seemed afraid of too much low end.
